Beach Drive!
Here on the Isla if you have a 4WD vehicle you can drive along the beach. In fact many avoid driving the bumpy dusty road into Mazatlan and just use the beach to get through those first 10 miles and connect to the paved road near Estrella del Mar, the golf resort. The locals simply use the beach as a main road. We don’t have such a vehicle so a beach drive is not an option.
However a week or so ago, our neighbors invited us for a beach ride! I was excited! It was low tide and we were going to search for sand dollars.
Never mind the sand dollars, it was great just being right out there, between the ocean and the jungle. No other vehicles, no tire tracks, just us and nature. I loved it! We did find a few sand dollars and I picked up some shells.
Bella wanted to find a few artsy pieces of palm fronds for her garden so Carl took us into the jungle and manoeuvred down some almost non existent sand tracks. What a great experience, although I will admit to being worried about becoming stuck in the middle of nowhere but Carl is a great driver. He has been coming here for years and seemed to be able to find things with no maps, no GPS, just knowledge and intuition. We saw Jicama flowers just coming into bloom.
We saw limes, called limons here, on trees.
He saved the best for last, a three headed palm tree. The people here on the Isla are quite proud of this tree as it is extremely rare.
They say it has been written about in National Geographic and is one of two in the entire world. Carl was not sure but believed the other three headed palm was possibly in Indonesia.
There is not much else to say but remarkable!!! Curious I later Googled three headed coco trees and discovered that yes they are rare but they are a wee bit more common than we thought. One if for sale for 1 million dollars if you are interested….http://coconutfreaks.blogspot.com/2006/01/three-head-coconut-palm.html#links For the rest of the story check out….http://coconutfreaks.blogspot.com/.
