Ramblings…..
…it is 8:15 PM Mazatlan time and I am finally sitting down to dinner with you. I’m having a glass of Sauvignon Blanc and cheese and crackers. It has been a different day and I just never quite got around to posting on my blog. We (that being the girls & I) awoke to heavy fog so we sort of just huddled inside. About 9AM, a big bang on the door….it was my neighbor checking that I was OK (because Colin is gone)! She wanted to be sure that I was with the living. So I got dressed and decided on all my to do’s for the day. Well, maybe, not exactly certain but I think I got 50% done! Mexican style!! One of the big things I did today was order a few things online to pick up in the US on our return to Canada. For the first time in 3 years the Canadian dollar was worth 1.032. YEAH!!!!!!!!! So of course I spent some money. Who didn’t?? I bought some really exciting items, like dog stuff and RV stuff…not a thing for me! I did order guitar strings for Colin.
The Holland America cruise ship ( we have cruised on the line a few times) did arrive, the fog horn heard by all. Why does it have to be so very foggy every Wed. morning? Nice to see all the activity on the beach. I met 3 sets of people within 30 minutes, the first a couple with children from New Orleans…they came HERE for Carnival. Isn’t that great? The wife told me that they have had a wonderful time here and don’t want to leave on Friday. I then met another American couple who are actually staying here on the Isla and love it so much that they have already made a reservation for next winter. Then I met the lady from Calgary, Alberta, Canada and her 3 very young children; they are almost at then end of their 2 week stay here and have loved every second. I was beaming from ear to ear….everyone who comes does end up loving this place.
I write the above with a reason…I have a reader from Montana who comes here a few times per year to enjoy her timeshare in the Golden Zone. Next week she & her husband are to arrive in Mazatlan with their son & daughter in law. Grande problema! The daughter in laws mom is quite concerned re all the negative media reports here. She does not want her daughter to come. I have offered to telephone both the mom and the daughter in law but have received no tel. #’s yet. Contessa-thank you so much for your support and input. I received a call from my son last night. They have decided to go, and not listen to Mom. Son has always thought it was fine, but your comments and an e-mail from a friend at the timeshare have bolstered DIL’s confidence. I will hang onto you offer of calling (DIL forwarded my friend’s e-mail to her mom) but it seems pretty good for now. Mostly packed, just have to make one more Walmart run, a bit of laundry, and put the last-minute stuff in Monday night. So excited-maybe we’ll even get over to Stone Island. If we do, I’ll look for your RV park and say hi!

Gotta love Mazatlan, we have never felt threatened or unsafe traveling in Mexico, just travel smart, same as you would in Canada and the US.

No problems here in Culiacan, the city many non residents call the most dangerous. There are rvrs who will not even drive close to this city for fear of their lives. Very strange people. I go walking downtown every day for hours and people are normal, doing what they want to and have to do with smiles on their faces, very friendly. VERY HAPPY PEOPLE.
Why is it that the USA and Canadian media go on a feeding frenzy everytime something happens in Mexico? Wouldnt it be interesting if the Mexican media published all the bad things happening in USA and Canada? Their newspapers would be filled to capacity and there would be no room to publish any of their own news. Culiacan is a very beautiful, clean, modern, cultural city.

For those wondering about south of Mazatlan via Puerto Vallarta, I was home in Nayarit for the month of February and all was well there as well.
I will advise however, that no matter where you are, it is always safe to travel with daylight if you are on the road. I have been driving to Mexico with my dad since I was 5 and we always traveled at the break of dawn and stopped when the sun went down. We are very familiar with Mexico and even then my father always traveled this way. It is just the safe way to go! Hope you all have safe travels for those of you on the road and if you are flying in/out, have a safe flight!

Contessa – You are AMAZING! I am the “daughter-in-law” mentioned above… and one of the main reasons I am feeling better about things is because of your kind words of wisdom. We haven’t gone to Stone Island-we did take a “Jungle Cruise,” which I think puts us on another part of the island. I think this is a must-do for this year. I’ll find out from the great people at the resort exactly which bus, etc. and we’ll come over. Actually Pattie (Joy of Nesting) wants to get together too, and her suggestion was Stone Island. Come to find out she’s from Montana, too!
If you see Santa coming up your walk, don’t be alarmed, it’s just my hubby!
Have you heard of “Peli?” Pattie says it’s the best place to eat on the Isla. We’re thinking Wednesday or Sunday for a trip over.
Have not heard of ‘Peli”. There is a Lety’s, a Benji’s and many others. Our new favorite is Puesta del Sol. Love their shrimp quesadillas. Either day is good to visit, just remember that Wed is cruise ship day so the beach will have people on it. On the other hand Sat. you will find more locals on the beach. A special day either way. The Isla is not difficult to get to, there are 2 different water taxis, one brings you right to the beach, the other requires a small pulmonia ride thru the village and to the beach.
