Stone Island Restaurants Close During Weekdays

Stone Island beach, deserted.

The cancellation of cruise ship arrivals in Mazatlán and decline in foreign visitors has forced 15 of 20 restaurants on the ever popular peninsula beaches of Stone Island to close their doors during weekdays, said Camilo Cárdenas, owner of a beach palapa restaurant for nine years.

The lack of foreign tourists has paralyzed the economic activity of the Island and as a consequence, neither are local families taking the lancha to spend the day at its beaches. It´s very sad, he said.

Don Camilo, a father with three sons, has closed his restaurant Monday to Friday opening only on the weekends when there is more traffic. To augment his income, he has taken on other employment in agriculture and has had to explain to his employees that he can give them work only on Saturday and Sunday.

Restaurants catering to tourists on catamarans are the only ones open during weekdays, he explained.

However, there is some reprieve in sight. Stone Island has been a traditional family outing destination for national tourists during Semana Santa, which begins April 17th.

This saddens me and makes me mad because I think we can blame the North American media for this. This does not have to be like this. How sad,

  2. Yes it is sad, and we agree with Mary, such a beautiful paradise.

  3. It saddens me for people like Don Camilo who make a living off of the tourism in Mazatlan. It then becomes a domino affect and takes down his employees as well.

It upsets all of us who love Mexico. You are so right Trinidad, I worry about the beach vendors! Even with the decrease in tourism because of the cruise ships stopping, the beach vendors had some people to sell to. Now with the restaurants closed other than on weekends things are grim. Semena Santa is but 7 – 10 days of activity, not enough to live on.
