Great news!!
Finally a bypass for those heading further south than Mazatlan. It won’t be ready for a year but I do think it will be a huge bonus to Rvers and truckers. It just might work for those of us heading to Tres Amigos on the Isla. I can do without driving through the Mazatlan traffic !! It’s only about a 10 minute drive back to the airport road from Villa Union, which is the turn off to Tres Amigos. Now if they can complete the new road from the Estrella Golf Resort to the RV park, all will be perfect.
In an interview with the Mazatlán Messenger in July, Director of Municipal Planning Israel Victoria Lona stated that construction of a by-pass road from Villa Union to connect with the Culiacán autopista is one of the present administration’s goals.
Today, Mayor Alejandro Higuera Osuna told media construction of the connector road would begin on Monday.
As there are no public resources available, Carlos Slim’s company Ideal will build the 20km by-pass and once completed, it will become a toll road concession. Groupo Ideal is also the contractor and concessionaire of the existing Mazatlán-Culiacán maxipista.
To avoid traffic congestion in Villa Union, the road is projected to begin east of the town, up to San Francisquito, through the towns of Miravalles and El Armadillo to finally connect with the Culiacán maxipista beside the new San Antonio Hills golf course and residential community.
Mayor Higuera explained construction of the by-pass is good news as Groupo Ideal will build a new bridge over the river relieving the perpetual traffic bottleneck on the Villa Union bridge.
The road is expected to be completed within one year.

sounds like great new road, bypassing Mazatlan is good news for sure, maybe will get a chance to use it someday.
George, I sincerely hope that the two of you come back to Mexico.
Croft, The new road may be of help to those heading into Maz simply because of less traffic. I agree that this year may indeed be a ‘quieter’ year in all of Mexico in terms of RVers, however i think that the following year will see larger numbers. With all the new road improvements and hopefully a second winter of non violence affecting Rvers things should return to normal.
The worst traffic jams we have experienced in Mexico have been the choke point through Villa Union. Carlos Slim’s new cuota will be nice for those heading south of Maz but it does not look like it wiil be much help for those of us staying in the beach areas on the north end of Maz. Still, anything to cut down on the truck traffic on the libre through town will be nice! It looks like it’s main purpose is to link up with the new Durango highway.
The problem this year for RVers will again be the low occupancy of RV parks in Mexico. I have heard that most parks have reservation rates of less than 10% of occupancy. This is good for those of us (us) who travel without reservations but is a bad indicator for Mexican RV parks in general. Our favorite park in San Miguel de Allende has already fallen to the bulldozer’s blade and there will be many more to follow. All because of the USA press and their “The sky is falling” mentality!
