Safeway, etc.

Yesterday I shopped till I dropped, almost literally!  I started the day early and just kept on going.

Safeway, Save On, Costco and Coopers….total spent $913.30.  Amount saved $266.18!!!  Well worth the effort.

It took me 2 hours to fill this cart. All the blue & orange bags hold cold or frozen items.

We ( I ) always stock up on items needed and some not so needed for our 5 months on the Isla.  As we don’t eat meat I always bring in some supplemental foods and things I know I can’t get there, although each year more and more items are becoming available.

I almost didn't stop here where I picked up stiff for me and for friends already on the Isla..

It doesn't look like that much but it filled the car.

The rain had stopped so I was able to unload the fridge & freezer things right away.  I left the other 50 bags for Colin to cart into the motorhome where that all now sits on the floor.  I guess that will be my job this weekend.  I have been buying a little here and there, saving a bundle on our special coffees last month at London Drugs.

I am down to filling the first aid cupboard, getting all the dogs stuff together. and a few other things.  We always mange to pick up stuff in the US as well as our wine.  Colin has already told me there is no room for wine this year, what a joker he is 🙂  I will buy and he can figure out the storage part.

Then we had company for dinner as they were only in the area for a short time.  I may be in slow motion today so just know that I will get back to all your emails and questions as soon as I can.

Wow, that was some shopping trip. You must have some impressive storage areas in that RV. I guess by now you know exactly what you can and cannot take across both borders. I know a lot of people talk about buying ahead before they head into Mexico but you are really hauling it all the way.

Chuck….absolutely, come pick it up on the Isla. That way you will have to stop in.

George, actually other than fish, veggies and fruit we don’t spend much more.

Susie…we get all our paper products here. I prefer to shop now and store it all away. I store it in 3 sections so I don’t need to get to the back bottom of the basement till Feb or March. I still get a few things in the US but then have no place to put it all.

Ruth…..probably a bit cheaper but like I told Susie I like to pre pack it all. Time is more of the issue and when there is stuff on sale that I know we need then I just go for it plus I know where everything is in the stores here. I never have time while on the road to do big shopping. When we leave here we are headed straight down. I do have a list of certain things we get in the US but not a huge amount like I did on this spree.

Longdog2….there is a reason we have a 40′ bus type RV…storage. There are certain things you can’t get down there plus once we are parked we don’t use the car much. What we don’t use gets brought back and used up here over the summer.

  2. We bought quite a bit as well, for us it was mostly my gluten free products, like you these things are had to find in Mexico. Some of the bigger grocery stores are starting to carry a bit more, but it is very expensive. Would you not have saved even more buying some of this stuff in the States on you way through?

Mexican toilet paper, paper towels/napkins are not great, I also stock up when theirs a sale and these things don’t weigh much but do alot of shopping in Arizona on way down.. Its better to pack most everything now as we run out of spots !! All worth it very soon…

  4. Nice you got all stocked up, now spend no money for the next 5 months(haha), have too much fun on the Isla!

    Can I borrow $266.18?

Are you limited on the amount of wine you can bring across the Mexican border?

Sorry Chris, never got back to you, yet! Thanks for stepping in Kevin.

We always take mucho vino with us, like 10 or 12 cases of 12 bottles. Lots of weight but I don’t like any of the box wines too much. Mexico allows you to bring in 3 litres of liquor AND 6 litres of wine anything else is suppose to be declared and duty paid. We have never been asked or checked however we did have RV friends checked going into Sonata last year and they searched their entire bus basement. Joe had them start at the opposite end of where their wine was stored and after 3 hours in the hot sun and finding nothing the search was stopped.

I say just go for it.

  7. Chris, we took 20L of wine over with us when we crossed over from Texas to Mexico and had no problem. Not sure if they have duty on it or not. They didn’t ask and we didn’t volunteer the info, but we also didn’t hide it either.
