We went to Mexico and made money!?!?!
You read that correctly. We are in a profit situation after our last trip to Mazatlan.
On September 20th, 2011 we purchased Mexican insurance for the RV and our tow car. Our government run insurance company, ICBC, here in B.C., Canada gives you a refund on your Canadian vehicle insurance for the the time spent in Mexico as long as it is over 30days. You do have to prove your last purchase in the US and your first purchase in Mexico and the reverse on your way back home with paper work you send in. Then you wait and wait and finally you get a cheque. In our case we made a profit!!
First the RV….we spent $692.00 for 6 months of Mexican insurance and received an ICBC refund of $831.00. Profit $139.00.
Our HHR, tow car cost us $252.50 for the Mexican insurance and the Canadian refund was $514.00. Profit $261.50.
Total profit of $400.50. Obviously we are paying high premiums here in B.C.
If I apply our toll road fees ( $238.00 ) coming and going we are still ahead $162.50.
There is only one conclusion, it pays to travel to Mexico. Well at least if you live in certain parts of Canada.
Special Birthday Wishes to all our American readers and friends!

That tears it-moving to Canada! Want to hear something funny? The conservatives in the US are so afraid of Obamacare, and so afraid it’s socialized medicine, that after the Supreme Court upheld the healthcare act they all threatened to move to Canada! Um…okay?
Marty….you are welcome….anytime!
Croft…..good points!
Mary….hang in there!
George….I thought that Ontario does do a Mexico Insurance refund….I will let you know.
Elaine….you make me blush but it does seem true this year.
First Off thank you !! 4th of July will be different this year, but still lets to reflect upon~ Secondly…WOW – There are some insurance bennies where you live!!
Plus all the money you saved by drinking the Two Buck Chuck!
Hey Marty – I have heard many Americans saying this. I am not sure how comfortable they would be with Canada’s socialized medical, Same Sex marriage and the fact that 45% of us admit to being Atheists! They would probably run back home in shock!
Croft, that’s what has us laughing! The very thing they’re fighting is what is abundant in Canada! Wouldn’t bother me, but I’m considered a “liberal.” (I hate labels!)
We live in Ontario Canada and cannot get an insurance rebate when travelling into to Mexico so is quite a bit more expensive for us. Good going BC.
wow way to go….making money!!!!! 🙂 seems everything you’touch’ turns to gold….we will get together soon for a chat…for sure…
just crurious, what was your first purchase in Mexico?
Mary….as we drive, the first thing is we pay to register the car, the RV already has a 10 year permit. That gives us a piece of paper with the date and time stamped and our licence plate numbers. Then we pass thru several tolls that are also timed & date stamped and we always spend the first night at an RV Park in San Carlos where we get our registration paper for the night with the licence plates added in. That is all that we need for the first night in and we do the reverse on the way out of Mexico. For our first night in the US, it is usually an RV Park with a receipt with the particulars added on.
