Movistar Internet
I found a special deal on an internet stick known as banda ancha.
There is a special promotion on until January 15, 2013 for 199 pesos or $15.40 CAD, $15.65 USD. For this price you get 1 GB of use for each of 5 consecutive months. You can always buy more GB's for 60 pesos each or so they explained to me. I have not needed to do so as of yet.
We do have good WiFi here at Tres Amigos RV Park on Stone Island but it does drop off on occasion. I was happy to pay the 199 pesos to a have back up internet plan. Not all locations are offering this promotion but I do know that it can be found at Walmart and Soriana for certain, at least here in Mazatlan.
Not sure what the price per GB will be when we return in November but as a back up this can be a throw away.

We are staying in the USA this winter and have done some research into mobile hotspots. These devices differ from an internet stick in that they allow connecting up to 5 devices wirelessly. (We have 2 computers and 2 iPhones). We looked at Verizon, Virgin and Internet-on-the-go. All 3 have no contract plans but the time purchased expires after 30 days and remaining data time is lost. We physically tested Virgin and Internet on the go and both worked fine. Note that all these units run on cellular systems and won’t give you hardwired speeds but suffice for email, surfing etc.
Internet on the go offers a plan that does not expire. You can buy 4 GB of data for $45.00 on the “Go Big” plan, use the device as needed, put it away while in Canada, turn it on when back in the US (within 1 year), and you are ready to go. This unit is sold by Walmart for $79.88 and runs on the Sprint system.

Kevin…..we actually use a Movistar cell phone as well and have had no problems over the years even in Acapulco where I got it and the middle of Mexico.

Definitely a deal on the internet stick and access. But, it is the Movistar one, not the TelCel one, and for people who travel around Mexico I think the TelCel one has better coverage. Either way, there seems to be some price competition on the go as this is the cheapest we’ve seen it in the last five years!
