MAJOR Snowbird/RVer News
For B.C., Canada snowbirds and RVers.
Would you like to be able to stay out of province for up to 7 months per year rather then the current 6 months? Who wouldn't like to have that option and still have our benefits covered?
If you want this to actually be passed in the B.C. Legislature I suggest you send an email or make a phone call to your MLA and to the Premier supporting this bill. If hundreds of us make our wishes known, this bill is more likely to pass. But it is up to you to make an effort.
Here is an easy way to find out who your MLA is and to send in your support for this bill. This is the link for Premier Christy Clark. If you have an extra moment how about another email to the Minister of Health, Dr. Margaret MacDiamid.
Might I suggest that you not only send in your personal support for this bill via email but also forward this to all of your BC snowbird and RVer friends. You might not need the 7 months now but in the future it will be appreciated.
Together we can make this happen. Do it today.

Thanks contessa. We’ll do that. Hope you are having a great time and a chance to relax…you deserve it.
Thanks for all of your emails and comments.
I have a good feeling about this. Within a few hours of sending it to my MLA he responded that he would support the bill. Now we just have to wait for the vote!
Hope it works for you guys.
We need to be in Ontario (not Canada) for 5 months of the year, to qualify for our health care. We can be elsewhere for 7 months of the year but only 6 months in the USA. So we can go to other Provinces or countries
Thanks for the links…I just e-mailed all..I also want to show my support for this legislation. I read your blog daily and enjoy all your posts.. Glad to see your winter is so enjoyable.
Thanks Contessa, emails sent, will pass link to you blog to my non blogging friends.
Thanks Contessa! I cc’d Adrian Dix as well seeing how he will be our new Premier in May. 😉
I didn’t even know there was a Canadian snowbird association.
AND this is a good time to remind everyone about the USA 3-year tax rule which says;
Add This Year number days + 1/3 Last Year number days + 1/6 Previous Year days. You are allowed a max 182 total days for the 3-year rule after which you are subject to the USA tax laws. If taxed I do not believe there is any relief under the Cdn tax rules.
If you plan to stay longer than the above rule allows, there is a USA tax relief form you can fill out. Cannot remember the form number.
Many do not know about this rule, however I do not know anyone who has been caught … yet! With increased border surveillence and upgraded computer software I suspect the worst.
Safe travels to all KenB
Hola Contessa and Colin,
Keep up the good work with your blog and I will get in touch with our local MLA about the 7 month rule
for being out of BC.
Yes I absolutely support this, it’s about time we caught up to the rest of the country
hopefully this will cover all of Canada??? All the provinces would be good!!!
Elaine…sorry this is just for BC. As far as I know Ontario already has the 7 months.
