Carnaval and the dentista

Last Saturday enroute to my dentista we were able to see nine of the ten giant paper mache statutes lining the malacon here in Mazatlan.  Our pulmonia driver kindly slowed just enough at each statue for me to take a quick shot.

The theme for the 116th Carnaval is Litoralia ~ la peile del mar ~ the skin of the sea.

The theme refers to the sea touching the shore.

All of the large Carnaval celebrations take place by the sea. For instance, Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, Venice, Italy, Havana, Cuba and of course New Orleans, Louisiana.

Mazatlan, Mexico is right up there with the best of them.

The two largest modern public Carnaval celebrations in Mexico are in Veracruz and Mazatlan with other large celebrations in Baja California and the Yucatán Peninsulas which attract significant numbers of visitors mostly from within Mexico.

Mazatlan has the oldest major modern Carnaval tradition in Mexico with a history of over a hundred years starting in 1898.

That was the fun part of the day.  Next stop was the dentista.

Another check and it was determined that I indeed needed that dreaded root canal.

Just a little more freezing por favor.

Half way done.

Ninety minutes later I was heading back to the Isla.  I wasn’t in any shape to enjoy the Carnival statues.  The pain is gone but the tooth area is still tender.  Next step a crown preparation.  If there are no complications the cost of both the root canal and crown will cost less than what just one of these proceedures would have cost at home.

Such artistry in those statues. How I would love to see those in person. I sure hope the rest of the root canal procedure goes smoothly. Take it easy! Grace (in Tucson)

Hola Grace….hopefully one day in the near future you will get to see some Carnival statues.

Lynne….the pain is diminishing. You can go and capture the statues. Today I noticed that they now have names.

Susan…I am doing very well thank you!

  3. I was going to go to town today to get some better shots of the Carnaval statues and see that you’ve now already done it for me! They are so fun and lively…and huge too!

Positive thoughts for your tooth to heal up nicely and pain to be gone!
