A story about some cherries
It is cherry season here in the Okanagan.
They are so good and I'm eating more than usual. I think I missed out last year because of my hip replacement. I certainly wasn't driving and Colin was too busy between me and his business to go the the orchards.
I think I've bought over 23lbs in 4 or 5 visits from this lady @ $1.75 per pound, picked that morning.
These 11 pounds were headed to my Dad in Edmonton. He loves cherries and wanted to come visit this summer but he is too frail.
So I chilled the cherries in my fridge, put them into a styrofoam cooler topped with newspaper.
The stores were all out of ice packs and this was the best I could do. I then put more newspaper on top of the ice packs, added the lid and taped the box shut.
Off to Edmonton via Calgary. The package was picked up at 9:30AM Wednesday and got to the Canpar depot in Edmonton 48 hours later.
My brother picked it up and put the cherries in his fridge and went back to work.
First thing Saturday morning Dad was eating fresh cherries, just picked a few days earlier. He was really surprised.
It was fun to be able to do this for him. Now he wants me to send peaches 😎 I think they would bruise too easily in the shipping.

Good deal that you sent the cherries, but like you said not too sure about the peaches.

Peter…thanks. I have a feeling that he will never ever get back here to visit as he is just too frail. He really wants to as he wants to see our new home in person. Right now we are working on a program to energize him and I’m also trying to inspire him.
What a precious thing to do for your Dad. Good memories for you to have. Reminded me of the time my sister sent us Snickers Candy Bars and Easter candy to Chapala, Mexico as we could buy neither in 1979.
This post just had me laughing out loud..”now he wants peaches”. What a sweetheart! you and your dad. It would almost be worth it to send the peaches, bruises and all, just to see the pleasure on his face. I have never posted a comment on your blog but I check in almost daily for your news. Luv the doxies, as I have a black and tan, and I have visited Stone Island in Mexico..Would love to return some day.

What a great daughter you are! That was really thoughtful of you. We just finished having some cherries here too and they were delicious. I was able to get them for $1.86/lb so not too bad!

Thanks Ruth. What shocks me is that cherries here in Kelowna are on sale for $2.49/lb at the grocery stores.

Best way I’ve found for peaches is to use the contents of your document shredder, layering and making a small nest for each peach. I used this method to haul several cooler chests full of peaches from Colorado to Arizona. My mom made ice blocks from wine bags (we’re box wine addicts) to lay along the sides. Works very well.
