I was battered by a rogue wave
The waves continue. The surf is so loud that we have to speak louder even up here at our site. Needless to say it is even louder right at the beach. Saturday morning we were just enjoying the energy of the ocean as we walked. We are always careful to keep an eye on the girls if they get too close to the water. At the far end of the beach a wave came in that covered them both. Carmeh is a bit taller and was fine but Caeli was being pulled to the right try as she was trying to get up to higher ground, her feet just did not reach the ground. I was close enough that I could have picked her up if necessary but the wave receded quickly and she was fine, just stunned a bit. That wave splashed up to my knees. On the walk back to the RV, Colin and I walked more in the surf and a few waves came thigh high. The tide was going out and the waves were not so high. Just in front of RV2 we stopped to talk to a couple and I turned my back to the ocean to see how the girls were going to react to their male poodle. Suddenly I was down and water was pouring over me. Colin tried to reach me and it only took a few seconds but it felt like minutes. I fell on my left side and all I could think about as the swirling water covered by face was loosing my eye glasses. Of course I was also concerned about landing and hurting my hips.
The girls were fine as they had climbed a 10-12 inch berm of sand and didn’t get wet but I was totally wet and shocked. Once Colin picked me up I just stood there mute and in a stupor. After shaking myself off I took inventory, my left knee and side hurt and I had sand all over me and in crevices you don’t want to know about. My dress and underwear were also full of sand, even the pockets of my dress. Back to the RV were I showered and left a bunch of sand on the shower floor. Yesterday I was stiff but walked anyway and today was massage day ( my last one 😥 ) which helped but I am going to be feeling it for a while. Where did that wave come from 😯
It saved Colin many back and forths in the car plus we got to use their muscles. The load includes our two mini outdoor fridges and our RV stairs with hand rail. I am really missing that since my tumble. Good thing we got the majority of our things moved Saturday as Semena Santa is gearing up to be a busy one here at the beach. Today we took down the dust screen and our dog fence and a car load of misc. things that will stay here. Not much left to do now.
I almost forgot. Baby Romina and family are still awaiting a final document from the Shriners Hospital in LA which is supposed to guaranty them a US Visa. I will keep you posted over the next few months as I follow up on this family.

Glad you survived the wave! Good grief. Time to pack up and move on. That’s what gypsies do. From a gypsy poem:
Night Moves
we came upon the caravan,
following the bodhrán and feandán
and found ourselves spinning round the bonfire;
painting memories with the swaying shadows,
while teaching the stars
to sing
You’ll never be home Contessa, we all have the wandering bug.
Oh Chris, how lovely. Yes we are ready to move on. The best part is that we shall continue to travel this summer. Enjoy your voyage manana.
Oh, my goodness, what a stunner! So glad you are only a little stiff and not broken! Those waves look crazy! So nice to see photos of Maria in your last couple of posts. I enjoy her blog…
Still stiff today. Maria had to leave earlier this year and didn’t want to of course. I did get some mangoes from her tree.
Oh no! I hate those waves – glad you came out of it ok. Cas and I survived one two years ago in Mexico so we are much more careful now – but still……. Poor seal is right!
Once in Hawaii I was taken by a very very large wave and tumbled repeatedly. That was even scarier. Now I understand why you prefer to be out of the water.
Glad you’re okay! That sounds rather scary if you’re not comfortable in water and/or absolutely need to avoid falls. Your sense of humour is intact, though, which is good. 🙂
(One of those rogue wave caught me early in my stay and I lost my keys as I was swept away! Thankfully, I was able to find them by swimming around the area and feeling the bottom. Very lucky!)
I still can’t believe how much stuff you need when you’re here. I didn’t bring a fraction of what you’re storing away!
I now remember you posting about the lost key incident. Yup we have ‘stuff’. We are not minimalists by any means. We enjoy having a comfortable area around us both inside and outside the RV.
We spend our summers on the beaches of Delaware and Maryland and never saw waves like that – yeagads – they are wild! So glad you escaped any serious injuries – they sure look like they could do some harm. We are supposed to get more snow tomorrow! Will Spring ever get here?
More snow 🙁 The waves are even worse as the rainy season approaches not to mention tropical depressions and hurricanes. They are fun to watch though.
Wow the power of the sea- I hope you are not too sore – and recovering. You would have been in shock with that sudden wave attack – I look forward to your upcoming journey home.
Today Tuesday, I am a bit less sore. Hopefully sitting for a long time driving home won’t affect it. Yes the ocean is very powerful. There were two drowned a few days ago.
Amazing how the sea cam sneak up on you, at least you did not get swept out to sea.
Now that would have been very bad. I am certain it happens in less protected areas here.
The power of water ! imagine what it must look like through the poochies eyes….
It sure seems like a daunting task at times staying in 2 countries for length of times…but so worth it.
Enjoyed your pictures….. nice to see Rae.
I never thought of what it would look like thru the dogs eyes, especially our low to the ground doxies. No wonder Caeli looks terrified half the time. Carmeh however enjoys prancing thru the surf.
