Almost a bonafide computer geek & Carmeh update
It’s amazing what you can learn from Dr. Google. Today I solved a problem that has been an issue even since we have used a computer. Hot machines šĀ At times our computers have run so hot that you could burn your fingers by touching the back.Ā I remember our laptop would burn my thighs.Ā I knew something wasn’t right.
Recently Colin has taken to running a household fan behind his 27″ desktop to keep the heat down.Ā The fan died this morning so I decided to do some research.Ā I Googled ‘how to cool an iMac computer’ and there went the next four hours.Ā Considering Colin has called our ‘Computer geek’ in on various occasions at the cost of $100.00/hour, I decided to tackle this one on my own.Ā So after 4 hours plus I really truly did solve the problem.Ā It turns out that Apple computers have a minimum factory setting for the built in fan control.Ā My computer was running at 135F and now is steady at 99F and no more heat emanating from it.Ā I later installed the same free download into Colin’s computer which is always finger burning hot.Ā It has also cooled down and is still cooling. A very simple matter of adjusting the fan speeds.Ā For those of you with Apple computers with the same problem check out this link for the smcFanControl.Ā I only downloaded the 2.4 version as the newer versions tend to have issues for a while.
Don’t you think Colin owes me $400.00 or at least another case of special vino?
Gosh between figuring out You Tube running on Chrome vs Firefox yesterday ( at least in my computer ), I may be ready to graduate to the next level.
We broke weather record after record here in BC the last few days, here is the scoop on our area.
Global warming…..no way šĀ It was very very warm in here last night but we did sleep without the A/C.
This morning we had rain showers and it was so nice to have that wonderful fresh rain smell coming in through the windows.Ā Such a wonderful reprieve from day after day of running the A/C.Ā Then later today we were issued severe thunderstorm warning, not just a watch.
Yikes….
Of course Carmeh went ballistic at the first clap of thunder.Ā Trying to run around with her tail between her legs.Ā Finally got her settled in the bathroom with the door closed 90% and a guitar CD playing at top volume.Ā She is used to Colin’s playing and often goes to sleep.Ā It did settle her a bit.Ā Meanwhile after about two hours the storm dissipated and we returned to blue skies.Ā We dodged the bullet, it seems the storm swirled around us but never hit us directly.Ā Thank goodness.
The next few days….
We had been at the vet just before the storm started this afternoon for Carmeh’s second acupuncture treatment.Ā She was not happy to be there but did tolerate it well.Ā She still has hot spots along her spine but she won’t let me ice her any longer.Ā So she remains on Metacam.Ā However it is now clear that in addition to her back issues she does have another problem.Ā We don’t know specifically what it is other than it is related to high liver enzymes as well as the ALP that is off the charts which normally refers to Cushing’s Disease which they say she does not have.Ā So is it a gall bladder issue?Ā Or??Ā A guessing game.Ā The vet suggested an ultrasound as they could find the cause of the problem and give her meds.Ā I asked if the Metacam might be the cause of the increased liver results.Ā Yes, possible.Ā So if we stop the Metacam she may be at risk for a disc rupture but her liver results will improve. But then her ALP is still way high and why?Ā What to do?Ā Right now we are going to stay as we are for the next 10 days which means giving the Metacam.Ā Next acupuncture is for July 8th and then we we discuss it all again.

Sorry there is no clear answer for your little girl. Is Metacam a steroid? Our vet put Fancy on a non-steroid pain reliever. Hope your next 10 days will show much improvement.
Thanks for the info on fan speed. I googled fan speed control for PCs as that is what my laptop is. My laptop really feels hot on my leg when I hold it also. I downloaded the app, Will see if it helps.

Metacam is a non steroid anti inflammatory which also reduces pain. Great that you could find an app for your PC. Hope it works. My computer fan ran all night and is still cool at 100F. I might decrease it so it doesn’t run all night.

I hope that storm is headed this way! We have been hot, hot, hot too and today the smoke from the fires in Northern Saskatchewan have hit us big time. At times we haven’t been able to see the other side of the river. Hoping the smoke doesn’t stick around too long.
I was going to say that you needed to give Colin a bill for all your work but a case of wine sounds great too! š

Those forest fires are nasty in so many ways and affect others far away. Hope the smoke soon blows the other way.

Sylvia and I spent the day wandering the Naramata Bench with our son. When we arrived it was pouring, it cleared up by early afternoon and then the clouds and lightning arrived. At 5:00 I was putting some wine in the truck at Poplar Grove. They have a magnificent view of downtown Penticton normally, but all of a sudden I couldn’t see anything so I grabbed our umbrella and ran back to get the rest of our party before the rains hit. I didn’t make it 30 feet before the deluge began so we decided to sit tigjt and wait it out. It didn’t last long, but man was it wet and wild for a while.
At least you got the wine in the truck first! Yes it was nasty and got worse later last night. Hope you enjoyed the first part of the day.
Good job finding smcFanControl, you have taught me something today. My iMac seems like it gets hot and I do run a little fan behind it at times. As far as the new laptop, I have not noticed any overheating problems yet.
My very first basset hound had lower back problems when he was older and acupuncture was the only treatment that helped him. It’s hard to play the guessing game, which I’ve been doing with Heidi for the past 9 months.
I’m glad to be of help. You have done so much for me in the past. Only thing is that the fan ran all night and don’t know if that is good or bad. My new MacAir seems to stay cool also.
I sure hope the acupuncture helps. Only time will tell. At least Heidi appears to be on the mend.

I MENTIONED TO YOU A FEW YEARS AGO WHEN ONE OF YOUR GIRLS WAS ON METACAM THAT THAT WAS THE MEDICATION WHICH KILLED GILL AND THE VETS ADMITTED THAT. IT SHUTDOWN HER LIVER FIRST, THEN HER KIDNEYS AND I HAD YOU HAVE HER PUT TO SLEEP. METACAM WAS ORDERED AS SHE HAD HORRIBLE BACK PAIN AND SHE COULDNāT EVEN GET TO THE VAN AT THE AURORA AS HER HIND LEGS JUST GAVE OUT. OBVIOUSLY I COULD NOT PICK HER UP AND PASSERSBY HELPED GET HER IN THE VAN, BEFORE HER LIVER BECAME INVOLVED, HER DIGESTIVE TRACK WAS EFFECTED BY THE METACAM. I HAD TO SPRAY A BARIUM LIKE LIQUID ON HER FOOD TO TRY TO SETTLE THE STOMACH FROM THE METACAM. PLEASE, PLEASE BE CAREFUL USING THE METACAM. THE VET TECHS CALLED AT LEAST 3 TIMES/DAY TO CHECK UP ON HER. THEN THEY WANTED TO USE THAT ON RONNY AND I REFUSED SO I WAS GIVING HIM INJECTIONS WHICH I HAD TO SMUGGLE THE VIALS INTO THE STATES AS THEY DIDNāT APPROVE OF IT AT THAT TIME. IS THERE NO OTHER MED, EITHER BY INJECTION OR LIQUID WHICH CARMEH COULD TAKE INSTEAD OF THE METACAM?
IF YOU CONTINUE WITH THE MEDTCAM MAKE CERTAIN CARMEH HAS HER LIVER FUNCTION TESTS AT LEAST VERY 2 WEEKS.
HI LEVELS OF ADL CAN CAUSE PROBLEMS FOR THE LIVER, BILE DUCTS, ETC. NEED TO KEEP A CLOSE EYE ON TH LEVELS IF THERE ARE INCREASING

I learn so much from google, that is always my first go to. If I can’t figure out something in quickbooks I google it. Hubby learned how to reload his AC coolant in an older truck through google. What did we do before the internet lol?

I agree about the internet but at the same time I think I spend too much time online.
Good job on the fan. Google is an amazing tool. I have learned so much from YouTube videos too! Step by step instructions. Charge him double!!!
