Summer is back…

…well at least for three days!  I was at Costco the other day and they now have Christmas trees, lights and decorations and even more holiday crap stuff for sale.  Christmas is over 3.5 months away 🙄   Thank goodness they weren’t yet playing Xmas music.  Wait, that is Walmart that starts that in October.  Today I saw pumpkins for sale at Superstore.  Never too early to pick up your pumpkin.  Actually Costco has had Halloween costumes on sale since September 1st.

We got up to 29C/84.2F today.  Colin has been gone all day and now at 8:30PM it is dark out and he is still not back.  I was out for about 4 hours midday and turned the A/C on as I could not leave the girls inside without some relief from the heat.  Gosh A/C in September?  I keep reminding myself that I was gone all of September and October and most of November last year ( caring for my Dad in Edmonton ) and so I missed this time of year.

We have guests arriving tomorrow for a few days and so I set about tidying up the yard earlier this afternoon.  Tons of spider webs to get rid off.  Not so much bird poop on the patio furniture, likely due to all the recent rain we had.  But I did discover that we had ( yes ‘had’ as in they are long gone or so I hope ) 2 resident bats living inside our large table umbrella.  Lots of bat poop under the folded umbrella was the give away.  I really can’t recall the last time we had it open so I guess they moved right in.  That made me think as to the last time we used our fire pit here and that was way back to June of 2014 when Chris and Juan were here.  Actually the last time we used our fire pit ( a different one ) on the Isla was with Chris and Juan way back in January.  I really need to get those guys back in my life, lots of action then.

We got the word today that friends are joining us on the Isla for a month in December.  Are they escaping El Nino?  What do you think about El Nino this winter?  Will it affect your travels?

OUr friends live in

Our friends live in Arizona yet they are traveling south.  So maybe that is good news for us.  Our palapa needs some work if we are going to have to live in the rain all winter.  Mazatlan and the Isla are to the right of the tip of the Baja.  I bet we get lucky, as we are a good inch below that dreaded red arrow.

Can you believe this? It's true. Taken just a week ago on Sept. 4th in Alberta, not too far from Jasper.

I feel so bad for these people. This was on the Coquilhala on the way here to Kep

I feel so bad for these people. This was on the Coquihalla Highway, just a day ago, on the way here to Kelowna from the coast.  What would cause such a fire?  Perhaps a leaking radiator.  Regardless, a devastating end to a vacation.

I leave you with me, the beautiful blond along with my new baby sister and my Mom.....way back when.

Thanks for all your great comments on the last post.  Lots of added information between your comments and my answers.  Who doesn’t love a comment 😉

HI ! That isla U mention is it a real isla or is the name of a location ??

The ‘Isla’ as I refer to it as, is actually on the tip of a peninsula which is situated across the shipping channel from Mazatlan in Mexico. Once you do the drive on ‘the road’ which is about 10 miles long and very rough you arrive at a small village and often don’t want to drive out again. Instead there are constant pangas or small boats that ferry people and their stuff back and forth to Mazatlan for about 8 pesos each way, roughly 40 cents in USD. It is called Isla de la Piedra or Stone Island. There are many day tours from Mazatlan to the Isla for tourists. We prefer to spend most of our time on the Isla and visit Mazatlan just a few times per month. Other Rver’s on the Isla will go into Mazatlan daily.

I pray you all have a wonderful winter vacation, after all that smoke this year, you’ll all need a good vacation.

Having lived in AZ during a pretty wet winter, I know all too well how RV’s fair in the desert. Thinking we will work our way back into dry area.

That fire, scares me as I have thought about something like happening. Now, with the waterbed, yes, waterbed in the back, if a fire started, the second it melted the waterbed mattress it would get a bunch of water in its face! I know one thing for sure, I think I would have tried to disconnect the car to save it. RV fires are not fun, and rather scary.

The snow, well… I am not ready to see or feel the effects yet.

Nice photo of you and your mom and baby sister.

Have a safe trip south, all of you.

Thanks for you thoughts Kay. You have a waterbed in your RV. Cool! I don’t think it would have been possible to disconnect the car without getting burnt. I would love to know more about the story. How did the fire get put out? How much damage was done to both vehicles? How did the fire start?

Last year we left in the snow and it was not fun. I’m pretty certain we are leaving on October 31st.

I got that photo from my sister’s Facebook page. I had never seen it before. It seems that my Dad had made photo albums for each of my siblings, not sure why I didn’t get one. Would have loved some of the older photos like that one.

  3. Back to the isla and enjoy you walks on the beach, leave Christmas commercialism backnup north.

I don’t think I could handle a wet winter after the summer I just had. Hopefully, we get lucky!

I have a friend who did some extensive research and it looks like we are going to have a perfect winter. I’ll post the details soon.

I lived one summer at Rock Lake. My dad was an Alberta Forest Ranger. We could see up the lake to the mountains that were the border of Jasper National Park. The lake was always ice cold, right off the glaciers!

    • Contessa says:

I can’t believe that one of my reader would have lived there. It is a small world. I’m sure that that lake was ice cold. What a fun place to spend a summer.

It was the summer after I was in Gr8, my last “childhood” summer. My Mom and Dad and younger sister and I lived in a tiny 1room cabin although my sister and I had a tent to sleep in which we loved! Didn’t figure out for years why that was!!

We had horses, a rowboat, inner tubes (didn’t use them much!) fishing rods, a guitar and an accordion to play with. No radio. Made our own music as we all sang. Oh, and we learned to shoot Dad’s rifle. Had a few encounters with bears, so he thought we should know. Never had to use them.

It was the best summer of my life. 🙂
Moved to Jasper Nat Park after that, discovered boys and was never the same!! Good times.

I’m officially jealous. What a wonderful childhood. Living in Jasper must have been great. Thanks for sharing those special memories.

Today is our first cool day. A cool front came through with rain. We’re in heaven. Amazing how well rain water works to green things up. We’ve had a few small fires but not any to make Mexican national news.
