We saw the eclipse of the supermoon

A supermoon occurs when a full moon or new moon makes its closest approach to the Earth.  In reality the moon is only about 14% larger and brighter than normal.  What made yesterday’s show so spectacular was that a total eclipse of the moon was happening at the same time.  The eclipse turns the moon into a reddish color thus giving it the name of blood moon.  The fact that this is only the 5th time since 1900 that this has occurred makes for an extraordinary event.  It is not expected to happen again until 2033.  I am pretty certain that both Colin and myself will be here to experience it once again and I plan to be better prepared.  I’m putting it in my day timer now.

Colin did get back in time from Vancouver to have dinner with me.  Suddenly I looked up and there it was.  He didn’t have the right lenses out and we were eating so we just went for it with my small hand held Canon SX280HS.

Certainly not a great shot but you do see the eclipse.

It would have helped if we had used a tripod. Just a quickie and we did enjoy the show.

Our friends Suzanne and Dave who go way back to our ballroom dance days and cruises sent us the shots they took last evening.  Fabulous.  Here are just a few.

Suzanne and I went to Trimble Park (at Trimble and 8th) to take the pics of the Super Blood Moon Eclipse. The verticals were taken using my DSLR, but my camera was too heavy for the tripod in vertical orientation…and didn’t come out as sharp as the horizontals from Suzanne’s new Panasonic Lumix p & s. The moon in eclipse was really dark, and to capture its red colour in the Earth’s shadow, I needed to shoot at two full stops of overexposure. Definitely required a tripod for the long exposures.

I think they took some pretty special photos. thanks for sharing.

We’ve all seen some great shots on a variety of media sites and blogs.  Technology is amazing.

Great pics! We got to go out last night and see the moon. Our camera doesn’t do those shots very well but thanks to blogger friends we have them.

Great that you got to see it. Amazing that we are up here in the North and you are much further South and we saw the same thing.

It was tricky shooting that moon. I did not have the proper equipment and was disappointed in my shots. Next time – use the right tripod and take a flashlight so I can change settings quickly.

  5. It was nice to actually see the Blood moon, even for a few minutes, with our cloud cover rolling in.
At least you got some of your own pictures.
