A long day indeed!

We awoke to a chilly 26F/-3.3C.  Thank goodness for our generator which gives two heaters the power to warm us along with running the furnace.  Up at 6:10AM 🙁  and driving an hour later.

We crossed the mighty Columbia River twice before we entered Oregon.

We crossed the mighty Columbia River twice before we entered Oregon.

It is a great river, many many years ago we did a repositioning cruise on a Holland America cruise ship as it traveled from Vancouver, BC to Portland, Oregon.  What a great voyage.  I remember sailing past so many private homes, large and small but a part of that river.  The ship was grand but I loved observing the river and all who lived on it as we passed.  I would love to have been a homeowner along the Columbia but at least I was privileged to be an observer.

But today we were traveling by land, not by water.  Next up was the Pendleton Pass through Oregon.  Some years the winds affect us and other years it could be anything.

Today It was a mix of cloud amd gloom

Today it was a mix of cloud and gloom, drizzle and the odd snow flurry.

Saw this RV along the pass....a great older Wanderlodge. Their message reads "It's about the destiination".

Several miles further we spied this on the back of a semi...

I would like to know what stories this home has to tell.

Lunch was a bowl of butternut squash soup.

As we left the fueling station we came saw this....hard to believe on the Oregon/Idaho border.

As we entered Idaho the sun and blue sky appeared.

Here we changed from PST to Mountain Standard Time but as were back to PST tomorrow when we enter Nevada we are sticking to PST. Just easier all around.

The setting sun as we approached our stop for the night in the Mountain Home Walmart. We are always the only RV here. It makes for a good boondock site for us considering our size.

Today was our longest day heading south. It happens because of where to stop and timing, etc. but at 412 miles, once is enough.

I’ll see you at the end of the road tomorrow.  Tonight promises to be as cold as last night.

Darn that weather. So glad we left on the 24th!
Cold here in Mesa. Safe travels South!

So happy you’re on your way!

I wonder with the weather being as dicey is it’s been getting the last few years if it might not be time to start rethinking your route? Maybe add an extra day so you can stop in Las Vegas rather than Ely, the point being to time it so you can drive through the cold mountainous region during the day, but stop where it’s warmer. You really live in a tricky area in terms of getting to Arizona directly with decent weather most of the way down because of all the mountains and limited choice of routes. I think any better routes would be much longer (like going straight down to California and then going east), but it could end up being worthwhile.

Hope you have a good night tonight in Ely!

It sure looks like we headed south at the right time. We had chilly nights but not cold like you guys. But you are covering a lot of ground so hopefully the weather will get better today. Safe travels.

We enjoy following your travels between Canada and Mexico each year. I teach intercultural communication at a community college in Washington state. You mention the Mexican influence on the Oregon/Washington border. You observed correctly. Pasco, Washington has a population of 56% Hispanics. It is known as Little Mexico. The president of Mexico visited Pasco when he was in Washington state. I encourage my students to visit Pasco and enjoy their Mexican culture. Safe travels!

  5. You certainly are covering a lot of miles…but when the end to this journey is by the sea in idyllic weather?….onward Ho! !! Travel safe enjoying your road pics..

All systems are go and you are well on your way. The weather could be a little better but you will be through it soon enough. We had a delay of at least a day as the fridge quit as we were about to leave.
