Fall clean up

It has been a cool autumn thus far.  It was 0C/32F this morning and only that warm because it was overcast.  This evening it is going down to -3C/27F and we do have clear skies at the moment.  However we are more fortunate than the prairie Provinces where they have been receiving snow. We have been using our fireplace everyday and sometimes all day.  Best thing I ever bought for this house.

This was taken last Saturday, October 8th, one of those sunset reflection portraits.  The sun actually sets to the right of the house but the reflection was much nicer than the actual sunset.  I wonder if it is a fall thing.

The high here yesterday was 7F/45F with only clouds.  Colin was actually caught up with his photoshop and awaiting some sunshine for a few more jobs so he declared the day ‘fall clean up’.

First thing was to empty our plant pots. We certainly had glorious flowers this past summer.

It took two overflowing golf carts loads to dispose of the plants and the totally root bound soil.

Quite the load. He was off to the compost piles near the garden area here in the park.

I did offer to help but he just kept going on his own.  Once the plants were done, he started to store our patio furniture and the various cutsies we have like our pieces of stone sculpture that we got in Patzcuaro.  Some of it goes under the house and the rest in the shed.  One year he loaded the shed from back to front and top to bottom and forgot to remove the things I needed to bring to Mexico.  This year he emptied the shed first and loaded my car which he then drove to the RV.  He was working full tilt.  Meanwhile I stayed inside doing the things we had to do for the business shut down and our prep for Mexico.  Each time I put my nose out the door I was assaulted by the coolness of the day.  I offered hot tea and such but Colin just kept plodding along.  He was on a roll and in fact did get our yard totally put away for the winter.  Of course once he came in I asked about such and such and he had neglected to do a few things and completed those in a few moments.  Nice to have such a large job completed.  My husband is a real trooper and goes the full nine yards.

We had also spent a few hours in the RV on Sunday where I got everything put back in place and ready for the loading.  I can’t believe that I had not been inside the RV since the day we arrived and unloaded back in April.  We unloaded together for the first day and then Colin did the rest while I started the piles of laundry as well as doing our personal taxes and the company year end once I had opened 5.5 months of mail. As the laundry was completed Colin would ferry it to the RV but it never ever got put away till this past weekend.  Making the bed and putting the linens away and such certainly got me in the let’s hit the road mode.  Only 18 sleeps left.  We were thankful that we had this Thanksgiving weekend to prepare for our trip South.

The sunset last evening taken through the window. NO way was I going to head out for a photo, too cold.

Today our gardener came to do our irrigation blow out. One more thing off the list.

Here in the Okanagan it is wine festival time, so many events to enjoy from grape crushing to wine tasting and food pairing and more.  However we are always too busy with our business at this time of year to attend.  Perhaps two years from now.

But I can't help but wonder why they don't provide door to door wine tastings?

We are deep in yard cleanup mode as well. Packing will wait awhile though, as we are almost 5 weeks away from ‘wheels turning south’.
Inthe meantime, we got back from the Lower Mainland yesterday, and are heading to Calgary tomorrow for a few days.

Nice that things are getting all wrapped up then hit the road again.
A wine truck would be a good thing.

  3. When we saw that they had 8cm of snow in Cabri, Saskatchewan last week, we knew we got outta Dodge just in time!

I don’t know about you but I always feel bad when I have to throw the flowers out when they are still flowering, I feel like I am hurting them, silly me! 🙁

I am sure you time will fly by and you will be on the road before you know it.

The picture of your flowers going to the compost pile was a beauty – a lasting memory of the blooms you have Haden’s enjoyed all summer. Sunset pictures are the best and you will soon be taking them from the Isla! Happy Days

  6. We only have part of the yard done, work and prep for Gabriola Island has taken over so the rest will have to wait. I did manage to take down the hummingbird feeder and scrub/put it away. The patio cushions will wait for a week or so. Part of the flowers were ripped out, part are still in but maybe those will be done too. Two frosts in a row here – very odd. We are supposed to get a major rain and windstorm for our weekend on Gabriola Island which doesn’t concern me in the least except if we get stuck on the island if ferries are cancelled as both have appointments on monday, me for my root canal and hubby for business. I guess today is only 17 more sleeps now for you!

I know that feeling of Colin’s. Once you get started you just can’t stop. Today I was going to paint the well. That led to many other things. It’s a feeling of accomplishment I guess. Wow, 18 more. How nice.
