It breaks my heart to share this with you….

Colin and I made the most difficult decision we have ever had to make.  Yesterday, about midday, on our patio, we had the girls put to rest.  Carmeh’s pancreatitis was returning and she was so very very thin and becoming weaker by the day.  Caeli had some sort of internal bowel issue and they both have been suffering from a skin infection ( possibly staphylococcus epidermis which was getting worse each day despite special shampoo treatments and antibiotics). With our long trip back home ahead of us is seemed that this was the right time.

Carmeh and Caeli loved each other and were always together.

Our last sunset together.

Caeli and I. She would have been 12 years old on April 1st.

Carmeh and I on her last morning. She would have been 14 on August 7th.

Of course the sunset that evening was most special.

Then a few minutes later just to the east these lovely pastel colors.

While to the west the sky was on fire.

We loved our girls so very very much and they will live in our hearts forever.

Oh, Contessa and Colin, our hearts are breaking. What a beautiful, loving tribute you’ve written for your precious girls. Blessings and love always!!

  2. Oh my god, that is so sad! We know how very much you and Colin loved them both and to loose them both at once must be so much more difficult. As you said they have always been together, that I am sure one wouldn’t have survive without the other.

We know so well that feeling of losing a such a treasured pet/family member and even though we lost Whiskey 5 1/2 years ago that feeling is still with us and we think of her often.

Our thoughts go out to you and Colin. Cherish all those memories of them, knowing that they are now in a better place where they can run and play and not be in pain.

Very sorry to hear about your loss. We went through that with our first Golden who you probably met in Celestino. It’s good though that you know you are doing the right thing to prevent further suffering.

Feel comfort that you gave the girls the best life and had the courage to know when it was their time. Very hard but the time spent and the memories so worth it.

  22. Bonnie says:

My thoughts and prayers are with you. The next few weeks will be very difficult for you and Colin. Please take comfort in knowing that your puppies had many, many fans through your blog and, no doubt, we all felt that same lump in our throat while reading this post. I have been a silent ‘lurker’ to your blog for several years; this is my first comment. Take care of yourself please.

  23. I well know how you and Colin are feeling right now and the pain in your hearts. Like you we have been there with our Max, Checkers, and little Cora. The loss and pain are wrenching as we are left with only their memories. Time is the eventual healer until one day we cross a line and life’s understanding rays of sunshine once again begin to shine…………..

  24. Nancy says:

    Hi Contessa and Colin,

We are all very sad to hear about the loss of your girls. We know how much they meant to you and I know the decision to help them pass was not an easy one. It was of course a decision made out of love and what a gift to allow peaceful passage from lives that were becoming more challenging.

We will miss seeing all four of you and wish you well during this time of grieving. Long lasting will be their footprints on your hearts.

Jessica, Susan and staff at Panorama Veterinary Services

  29. Jean says:

So very sorry to read the news, I know how you loved them and how hard it is to let them go.

  30. I’m so very sorry to hear this news– I know your hearts must be devastated and breaking. It was my 2nd anniversary of losing Millie this week and while the pain has faded over time, the hole in your heart just never can go away.

It helped me a lot to go back and look at all the photos & videos from over the years. I hope you and Colin can do this in the coming days when you feel up to it. What a wonderful life & so many happy memories you both shared with the girls!

My thoughts will be with you both in the coming days.

  31. Colleen says:

My heart is breaking for you both. This is such devastating news and to lose both of them at once is horrendous. Dachsies are such special little dogs with so much personality. I lost my little Gretchen over a year ago and it still hurts. I think of her and Ginger and Heidi and Fritz often. Hugs to you both.

  32. Kathryn Tycho says:

There is nothing to say except I’m sorry. It takes special dog owners to put their dogs first and not hang on too long. Only you know when it’s the right time. I’m glad that this didn’t happen in a crisis situation but was instead in place that the girls were always so happy.

  33. Evelyn Wood says:

I’m so sorry for your loss. 🙁

  34. Shelby Smith says:

I am so sorry to hear about your girls. I know how much you both must be hurting. We lost Kissy almost 14 months ago. She was 15 and a half. Amazing what a big hole in your life one little dog can leave. I can’t imagine losing both at once. My sympathies to you both.

  35. Shelagh says:

Contessa, I read this post this morning and now have come back to comment. The only thing I can say is that pets do not live with a number in their heads as us human do. They only live with their hearts. So they both had a wonderful life that was filled with so much love. We should all be so lucky.

So Peter and I will drink a toast to you four having had a great life together. Hugs to you both.
    Shelagh

  36. Sandy Matts says:

We are so very sad and so very sorry – this brought tears to our eyes.
