Good news

I now have two working computers.  I picked up the iMac desktop late yesterday afternoon.

The first thing I did was pepper the techs with lots of questions as to why it happened, etc.  Also why was the laptop alright but not the desktop?  It turns out that it was not a failed hard drive on the iMac as they first thought.  That included the other three new computers that they tried and thought that the hard drives had also failed.  I believe I mentioned previously that the new iMacs now only work with the Sierra OS.  For some reason it was fine when I brought it home late last Thursday but when I went to open Open Office the program on Friday morning, it crashed.  Later in the day I took it in and it was the next morning ( last Saturday ) that the system failed as the tech was trying to restore the computer.  They don’t know for certain but it could have been a glitch between Sierra and Open Office.

This past Monday, just a few days ago Apple launched it’s next OS which is High Sierra.  Fortunately for me this level up allowed my computer to function.  My iMac and all future iMacs will only run on High Sierra.  Of course I asked about all the rest of the world who bought a new iMac in September.  Did they all crash?  Of course not.  They don’t know why what happened happened.  All we know is that it now works.  I have been using it all day and all is well.

As to why the laptop had no issue with Sierra, it was because it was an older computer (2015 ) that can operate on a lower OS .  I have decided not to upgrade the MacBook Air to High Sierra until I see how the iMac functions.  The High Sierra is an upgrade to the behind the scenes, the thinking part of the computer.  Nothing has changed visually.

All I can say is that I am lucky the update happened a few days ago or I would have been stuck with my old desktop that won’t operate iPhoto.  There is no room in the laptop for photos, I have 45,000 or so.  So I would have not have had any access to my current photos from the past few months.   Colin did do a download to an extra hard drive of all my photos last fall. They told me that I would have had to wait for the next batch of computers that only work with High Sierra 🙄

Now I have to figure out how to install the printer and I should be good to go.  I have spent the entire day trying to catch up.  It has been a perfect autumn day here with a blue sky and 75F/24C.  I was going to try and head out for a walk but got bogged down in catching up the business.  I am also doing a back up to the new time machine and that has been running for 8 hours and has another 5 hours to run.  At least it has finally started copying onto the hard drive.

I just gave myself a mini heart attack.  I was looking for a particular photo to add to the bottom of this post.  Somehow my iPhoto has no photos after Sept. 9th which is most unusual.  I just now found some on the laptop and a few still in my camera.  So I guess I am okay, nothing major appears to be missing.  Now I just have to figure this new iPhoto.  By the way this is not the current Apple iPhoto but the one previous to it which I had requested.  The program that was in my old desktop and the one I love and can use well won’t operate on either of my two computers.  So I now have another learning curve.  One day I will have to get back to learning my iPhone.

My gosh I don’t see how I am going to have time to start preparing for our trip to Mexico.  I am weeks behind and have a full slate ahead of me 😥

A somewhat fuzzy photo of a lovely heron just offshore. I took this from inside the house as I did not want to frighten it away.

  1. So glad you are up and running again. It can be so bloody frustrating and you have to be your own tech half the time. We are so fortunate to have a good friend who is a computer tech who comes for dinner and beers and figures out the really complicated stuff. The rest of the time youtube is my friend and I fake my way through things.

The problem is, is that we ar3e not tech minded at all. We just know what we need to know to get by. However I certainly have picked up some knowledge these past few weeks.

OMG! I was really getting concerned about the outcome. Very happy to hear this going to get you back on track so you can prepare for Mazatlan!

Every time this new desktop slows down a tad or pauses to think I panic. It will take me a few days to regain my confidence with the new machine. As to Mexico I am about 3 weeks behind where I normally am. Hopefully I will get it together.

glad to read that your computer issues are hopefully over. I had to take mine in to repair too – luckilu not a big problem and I got it back in two days. don’t you hate having to learn new programs/software that you really didn’t want in the first place.

So glad your computer is fixed and love the pic of the heron even if it is a little fuzzy 🙂

I don’t know how you have managed to stay sane and deal with all the computer issues. I don’t have enough wine or Tequila.
