And we are off

So much stuff required us to pull out the big suitcases.  The stuffed animals were all given to our girls by Mommio over the years.  She loves music and fun things.  Each one of these sing and dance.  So much fun.  Of course we are returning them to her so she has something that used to belong to her.  Colin commented the other day that even all the photo albums of her younger days and accomplishments over the years have disappeared. We hope to banish that sadness starting today.

We filled our old hard sided Samsonite with the comforter and other birthday gifts .  It sure holds a lot @ 27 x 22 x 9.  The red suitcase is a new purchase for our trip to Europe next May.  It measures 27 1/2 x 16 x 12.  At one point we thought we would also have to also use one of our carry on bags but everything fit into both of these suitcases.

Good thing that I am a member of the Westjet Rewards program as both bags can be checked at no charge.  Sad to see them coming back empty on Sunday. Another saving of $100.00 to us.  Who pays $25.00 to check a bag each way these days?  Interesting that they only charge the one fee from Kelowna to Winnipeg per each piece of luggage, but charge us seat selection from Kelowna to Calgary and yet another charge for seat section from Calgary to Winnipeg.

I am paying the full price for my return ticket Kelowna to Winnipeg.  As a Westjet Rewards member I get one free companion pass per year.  Depending on where you are traveling, domestic/USA or Europe, there is a different fee for the ‘free’ ticket.  This one cost $99.00 ( cost for the ‘free ‘ pass to anywhere in Canada or the US ) for Colin’s ticket.  However one is still charged all those irritating but necessary  ( to someone ) taxes.  As you can see Colin’s free ticket cost us $209.21 of which $110.21 is taxes.  We always prebook our seats so that cost another $31.50, so a total of $240.71.  Far better than my cost of $580.00.  These days you can fly from Vancouver to pretty much anywhere in the world for less than that.

So it snowed Thursday in Winnipeg but they tell me that it is melting.  Good thing as I will be wearing open toed sandals with socks. It was -9C earlier so I guess it is warming up.  We leave at about 9PM Sunday and land here just after 11PM local time.

On another note we discovered yesterday and confirmed with a staff member that Mommio has no winter clothing at all.  She has a light spring jacket.  I asked the social worker to check about getting Mommio her winter clothes from the POA brothers.  We certainly hope that her lovely winter coat has not been disposed of.  Meanwhile I have packed another heavy fleece jacket for me to wear while she uses my black leather winter jacket 🙁

Actually at 4:40AM right now it is -11C.  Yikes!

Looks like you are ready to go and cheer up Mommio, enjoy the time with her.

  2. Have fun and stay warm. I never prebook seats on Westjet – even for hubby on business – only because they never ever overbook their flights (unless they have a mechanical issue out of their control) and because every time I sign in to book seats within 24 hours and if two of us are flying they automatically have already sat us together-little known tip to save money. If I don’t like the seats assigned I then change them if there are others available. I aways check us in exactly 24 hours out though for best seat selection.

Other airlines are not the same and I do prebook, especially for European flights though.

THANK YOU CONTESSA. WATCHED BOTH FLIGHTS. BOTH LEFT EARLY AND ARRIVED EARLY. THAT’S WHAT I LIKE ABOUT WESTJET WHO ARE THE ONLY CARRIER I WILL FLY!! IF THEY DON’T GO, I DON’T FLY.

HAVE FUN AND THEN GET HOME TO REST SOME BEFORE THE LONG DRIVE.

    HUGS.

Too bad you can’t haul the brother’s butts into court for mistreating their mother!

Contessa, better watch it! Mommio looks like a woman of style, and you may not get your black leather coat back. Ha!

  8. Have a great trip and I hope that Colin’s mother is doing well.

Yep, the cost of air travel within Canada is crazy! You mentioned that you don’t understand why anyone would pay $25 to check a bag which we don’t but I could also say the same about pre-booking your seats especially for a distance like that. I understand that everyone has their reasons but the same goes for checking a bag. It all comes down to what works best for everyone. 🙂

Hope you have a smooth flight.
