Death of a computer
Colin landed safely yesterday at 11PM and I was there to pick him up. We ended up chatting until 1:30AM 🙄
This morning when he went to turn on his 27″ iMac desktop it struggled to come to life. Eventually he called Apple Support and with them suggesting turn off then turn on holding down certain keys repeatedly it just up and died.
It is never convenient when your computer dies but this time it was the absolute worse time possible. Colin has not worked most of the summer due to the smoke. Today we had 87% great weather conditions. Half the day was spent on sorting out the computer issue. It was obvious that we had to purchase a new computer on the Sunday of a long weekend. Turns out that there was only one 27″ iMac computer left in all of Kelowna. Meanwhile the clouds were coming in and time was ticking. He got a few small jobs done and then headed over to Best Buy.
Tomorrow is supposed to have clouds and showers but following that there are three almost perfect days to get some work done. We need a computer pronto. Hopefully tomorrow will be the day that we get the new one up and running with all data transferred.
Meanwhile the latest news report states that we are likely to be inundated with smoke again. Please, please don’t let it happen.
It has been a wine evening for me 😳 Dinner is almost ready now at 8:30PM. Colin’s first job is at 7AM tomorrow. Life goes on.
The end of the visit with Mommio coming soon. Stay tuned 🙄

OMGOSH. I HOPE HIS HARD DRIVE WAS BACKED UP AND NOTHING WAS LOST. YOU MENTIONED THAT HE HAD DONE SOME WORK WHILE SITTING IN THE AIRPORT SO THAT WOULDN’T HAVE MADE IT INTO THAT COMPUTER YET. YOU’RE RIGHT. THERE NEVER IS A GOOD TIME FOR A COMPUTER TO CRASH. I HAVE 3 EXTERNAL HARD DRIVES, ONE DOES AN AUTO BACKUP AND I DO THE OTHER TWO. I DON’T EVEN WORK BUT HAVE OVER 25,000 FILES AND NOW I’M DOWN TO 3,300 PHOTOS!!! HAVE BEEN DOING A LITTLE HOUSE CLEANING!! EVERYTHING IS IN MY COMPUTER.
UNFORTUNATELY I DO BELIEVE THE SMOKE IS COMING BACK. OUR LEVEL ROSE TODAY AND FOR ME IT WAS VERY NOTICEABLE EVEN BEFORE CHECKING THE WEATHER.
HOPE COLIN HAS A QUICK SETUP WITH THE NEW COMPUTER AND THAT HE CAN GET SOME WORK DONE WITH CLEAR SKIES.
We are back to smoke this morning.
Yes Colin has backups, he always backs up his photography in three different hard drives.
Computers do not last forever I just got a new Mac as you know. No doubt Colin has his all back up with the time machine and the new one will be up and running soon.
But Mac’s do last a very long time which is fortunate.
Imagine retirement, no worries about weather or smoke…
Oh I am imagining it and ready to hit the road. However Colin does like to do his photography. Like you say weather and smoke cause the irritations especially with the deadlines we have.
‘Tis the season for computer problems! Colin, George, Rae, me. I came off on top here because everyone else has Mac and I have cheap Windows.
We have a Gateway going on 12 years. Still works very well. The other two might have lasted longer if I had dropped one and the other fell from the overhead compartment when some millennial couldn’t wait to land and opened it, the laptop falling to the floor and breaking the hinges. Still works though, I have to use the on screen keyboard.
Hi Contessa and Colin,
It is my experience that Apple is not making as good a computer as in previous models. There seems to be a common denominator that they are moving more to the i pads and I phones.
In my opinion, you can get a fairly nice laptop (you might already own that) with enough horsepower to do the photoshop, and you can mate it to a nice 27 inch Apple monitor. I have done that system, and it works marvellous for me.
Just an option. And you are more portable this way too.
Again, you might have already considers this, am opted out. But just my 2 cents worth.
Great idea but Colin needs/likes to use a proper keyboard and mouse. Too late as he already had purchased the new one and it is being set up today form the Time Machine.
