Williams to Page, Arizona

We left Williams last Thursday, October 18th.  It was a very cool 37F.  Good thing everything was put away the night before and we just had to bring the slides in.  Colin had even hooked up the car.  Remember that lovely Mexican restaurant we had dinner at in Williams the night before?  This morning the RV stunk like rancid grease.  The clothes we had worn to the restaurant simply reeked, so much so that we had to put them into the car and leave each window open a tiny bit.  I guess the restaurant did not have a ventilation system in the kitchen and we never noticed any smell when we entered or while we were there. We were finally driving by 8:40AM.  Our first stop was to get propane at a ridiculous price of $3.19 per gallon but they were the only place in town.

The mountain peaks got a lot of snow during the past few days.

On our first day to the Grand Canyon we spied a few stations that we might get the RV into. There was no way that we were going to pay $3.69 per gallon for diesel.  The first fuel station had out of order signs on all six pumps, but there was another station across the street which after some scouting on foot Colin figured we could get into and most  importantly out of again at just the one pump as long as no one else was in the way.  In the end it worked out and we got diesel for $3.09 and saved $39.00US.

We hadn’t gone more than a few miles when Colin said he had to pull over. What!!  He could not remember if he had replaced the gas cap or not.  He hadn’t and it was gone.  It was only last year on November 7th in Oregon that he did the same thing.  We used Gorilla tape as a cover until we got to Mexico and Eric found us a replacement.  Our unique cap fit is impossible to find in the US.   Once we get yet another replacement, Colin is going to devise some sort of attachment to it.  At the moment all he can do is put it on the bumper which is quite low and easily forgotten.  This was my view out the window as he fixed it up with duck tape as he could not find the Gorilla tape.

Not long thereafter we stopped again as he was hungry and wanted a muffin and some fruit.  Finally after 5 stops we were really on the way.

A most scenic drive.

Ever changing colors…

…and shapes.

We finally got into Page about 1:15PM.  First we had to find a spot for us at the Walmart between all the other RV’s already in the lot.  After unhooking we were able to find a nice quiet spot away from everyone.   Bad news, no internet.  Neither on my ATT hot spot device nor from the Walmart free WiFi which we later found out only worked in the store.  That night we ended going to McDonald’s to publish my post but again that WiFi only worked in the restaurant.  Why were we in Page you ask?

To see the famous Horseshoe Bend in the Colorado River.  Colin of course took this photo.  A dramatic view.

Can you spot Colin at the top, just in front of three others?  He was looking for a better angle but his first shot was the winner.

We had asked someone else to take our photo but this selfie turned out much better.

It looks like someone is camping down there.

I had to take this photo to show how stupid people can be.  There are signs all over about going to the edge.  It looks like this overhanging piece of rock could crumble at any moment.

Getting down to the view site of Horseshoe Bend is a long way down, some parts rather steep and other areas requiring good footwear to get over the larger rocks.  Then of course there is that uphill return.  That roof top shelter at the top right only comes after a hike up from the parking lot and then there is the descent from there.  As you can barely see in this photo, when going back up, the path zigs over to the left and then zigs right up a long steep stretch back to that shelter.  The people look like ants, it is that far.  I was huffing with the rest of them.  It is only 1.5 miles round trip but the steepness makes is seem like much more.

There is construction going on here to make a better and easier and much safer path.  This photo is just to the right of that wooden fence in the photo above.  It is a part of the new path.  The project was to be completed by now but it looks to be only a third done.  It will be a much less steep grade to the top.

We were surprised that there was no charge at all to see this attraction.  That is a 1000 foot drop.

Afterwards we just went for a drive in the area.

How did he get down there?

No way was I going down. I had done my climbing for the day.

Back to Chez Walmart where the car and van sleepers were arriving.  It seemed to me that there were more of us than regular customers.  The other side of this truck was strewn with stuff.  At least he is getting his towel dry in the sun and his dog is having a good snooze.

At sunset it was 57F out, still chilly to be sleeping in a car. It was a very quiet night and we both slept well.

Today we only drove 169.3 miles.

It was nice to be free of the computer for a full day.

I ALWAYS LEAVE MY KEYS IN THE GAS CAP SO IF I FORGET TO PUT IT BACK ON, I’LL NEVER BE ABLE TO START MY VEHICLE.

SOME VERY PRETTY ROCK FORMATIONS AGAIN. OF COURSE THAT’S WHAT IS FASCINATING ABOUT THE SOUTHWEST DESERT.

Great idea but we need to leave the keys in the ignition as I check that the fuel gauge is just over full. We will come up with a solution.

  3. Beautiful pictures of amazing scenery.
As they say “You can’t fix Stupid”. Her family would probably sue if she fell even though all the signs were there.
    Be Safe and Enjoy!

    It’s about time.

There is such spectacular scenery in that area. We really enjoyed our time there. Are you going to see Antelope Canyon?

The cap on The Van used to have one of those pig-taily thingies but it eventually broke. Now, when I remove the cap I put it on the driver’s seat before doing anything else. My behind is more plush than it should be, but I can still tell if I’m sitting on something that big. Even if I don’t, at the least it will be safely inside The Van with me when I do finally remember it.

Well there is an idea. I had to laugh at the vision of you sitting on the gas cap. Not sure it would work for us as we don’t have a driver’s door nor a front entry. However I could make sure that he hands it to me thru the window as soon as he takes it off.
