Coral Pink Sand Dunes State Park
Last Tuesday, October 23rd we were rested enough for the next adventure. These sand dunes are only 40 miles from here.
Not far to drive with some very beautiful scenery along the way. That red sign you see is for the Best Friends Animal Sanctuary which one of my readers suggested we visit. I was already aware of this wonderful place but neither of us are ready to be in an environment like that. We still miss our girls too much.
These rocks are very weathered. Photos not too sharp as we were driving.
The visit to the Coral Pink Sand Dunes was a disappointment. First off you have to pay $8.00 to get into the State Park where the dunes are located and there is only one small observation area. Half of my reason for wanting to go there was to see the South Fork Indian Canyon Pictographs as well as the Hell Dive Pictographs and the nearby dinosaur tracks. Nowhere in any of the literature I picked up about this State Park said that you need an ATV or off road vehicle to reach the trail head to these sites which is 4 miles away through the dunes:-x
However we did get to see the lovely color of the sand.

These folks were both riding over the sand and sledding in it.
How are sand Dunes formed?
We were not interested in either walking through the sand nor climbing the dunes.
But we did play in the sand. Hard to see but in the upper right hand corner you can barely see the sand I threw up in the air. Sadly the sand was heavy and wet, just a fraction of a millimeter on top was dry. It was also cold so I was not interested in walking thru the sand barefoot.

The sand was extremely fine. It had rained Sunday and Monday and I guess that is why the sand is so wet and heavy.

Back to the RV with our glorious vistas.
They never get old. I could watch the changing colors all day. However this was the day that Hurricane Willa touched down in Mexico. As I mentioned in the previous post, I was mostly on the computer until I went to bed Tuesday night worrying about what was going to happen.

Great job with photo and explaining the area. Looks like lots of people where out enjoying the sand dunes. We where there and no one else was around. Beauty is everywhere.

Lovely Photos – like the last one of the moon. We stayed one night at Coral Pink Sands Campground – it was September and the bees just about drove us out. We were in a pick-up camper and they wanted inside in the worst way. Tried all the windows, door and a few even got through the vent above the stove – seems like it was near sunset. Although the sand dunes were a marvel to see the stay there was unpleasant as the bees were still outside the next morning. So very happy Mazatlan and Guayabitos were spared from Willa but the little fishing village of Teacapan took a pretty hard hit. Continued safe travels for you

Ahh no George, not going to happen. Besides we really don’t like to ATV. However we would have loved to have rented an RV at the state park so that we could go and see what I wanted to see. Someone should rent out ATV’s there.
We were also very disappointed in the dunes. But it was a beautiful drive. We went to Best Friends. Twice in fact. They do amazing work. They have lots of big dogs. At least when we were there. Very few little ones.

Great picture of the sand in your hand. Definitely a different color than the beach sand you will see soon and the sand I have near me. Like you I never get tired seeing the landscape in Utah. At least you got to see something without an ATV.
We made the experience fun. I think that the sand would look even finer if it were not so damp.
We liked our ride out the sand dunes and the scenery but didn’t think there was much to see without an ATV either. We ride out to Teacapan every winter to have lunch at Otto’s Japanese restaurant. Hope he and his family are ok.

Very neat – that movie “One Little Indian” – was made in 1973 . In September 1989 on my very first trip to Mexico, very first trip to Mazatlan with my boyfriend at the time we stayed at The Playa. We met an actor named Rudy Diaz (he was Apache descendent) who apparently rented one of the ocean front suites there every fall. He was in that movie!! He was late in his career when we met him, already maybe had retired but the nicest man. He mailed us black and white head shots autographed a few months later.
