Fun at the Tiki Hut
At this moment in life, my priority is getting my knee better. I have odd pains and sometimes feel ‘shooting stars’ in my knee. It is looking better and is barely inflamed. However the exercises are taking an enormous amount of time each day and that is my priority. I also realized that if I were home or in any city that I would likely be doing a few walks per day around a block or two. Here I have been told that I am not able to walk the beach for at least a month. However that means that I have nowhere to walk except here in the gravel RV parking lot. That is not even a bit of fun. Why can’t I walk on the beach? I am thinking of walking when the tide is low and the sand is hard packed. Of course I do have to walk thru the soft sand to get to the flat stuff but Colin will be there to steady me. I would appreciate some input from those who have had meniscus surgery. The doctor told me to do what I normally do until I get fatigued and then I need to rest. Walking the beach is what I do when I am here. Any input would be great including if I am good to walk barefoot as I usually do. I will not be wearing running shoes.
I am going to have to make some changes to my routine. I tend to write my blog at night just before dinner. However I now have exercises to do at that time and somehow the day gets away from me which means that the blog is falling behind. I had to force myself to get outside today for a few hours which is a good thing. Not quite sure how I am going to handle this but I will do my best to keeping posting but it will no longer be on a day basis, at least not for a few weeks.

Those margaritas look tasty, I’ve not had a really good one in a REALLY long time.
They were excellent. Guess where I will be this coming Friday?
I had (have) ‘shooting stars’ since my knee replacements last summer. The surgeon said it was damaged or severed nerves trying to make new a connection. I don’t remember that from my meniscus surgeries (3), but they were a long time ago …. 1999, 2005, 2006. I bounced back quickly from those, but I was younger !
Keep in mind that everyone recovers differently from surgery, and everyone’s body handles surgery differently.
After my knee replacements, the dr encouraged me to walk as much as possible, but cut back if it hurt a lot or swelled a lot. Is there a paved road or sidewalks nearby that you could easily drive to? Even at week 2, I was walking half a block with my walker. But I wasn’t doing as much PT as you seem to be doing. I drove to PT 3 times a week for an hr, and my exercises at home only took 15 minutes twice a day.
At 6 weeks I had dumped my cane and was walking a mile a day with my dogs.
Seems like you’re being diligent with your exercising and that’s the critical part, otherwise you don’t regain a normal gait and you lose range of motion. So keep at it ! It just takes time.
Oh thanks for this Carol. Good to know about the shooting star syndrome. I really appreciate all of the information you have given me. YOU really did very after your knee replacement surgeries. Sadly there are no paved roads around here that would work. There is the one area by the embarcadero but it is not a great place to be walking. I am resigned to walking the parking lot here for a while bit I will follow my physio orders as I do want a full recovery.
The thing about walking in sand is that it shifts. Impossible to keep your knee stable on a shifting surface. Chair dancing is my favorite way of dancing now. Good thing it’s not my hips that give me problems, though. I like that the singer was sitting in two chairs stacked up; makes getting up easier. We all find ways of doing what we want to do.
I was thinking about walking in the hard packed sand once the tide goes out. Colin would help me get thru the dry sand. However both beach walking and dancing are on hold for now.
You may not be doing much walking but it looks like you are loosing weight, you look wonderful.
Looks can be deceiving 🙂 I need to move to get rid of some of this extra weight I have picked up sitting around.
