Unexpected projects
Yesterday did not go as planned. We, well mostly Colin, had to deal with the unexpected.
The latch on the window above the head of my bed is broken.
He tried to figure out what the problem was.
Something within the mechanism is broken. Guess we have no choice but to wait until businesses start to open up again to find a replacement.
I was doing something on the computer when I heard him rattling around the kitchen.
We had some very very ripe bananas that he did not what to throw out so he found a recipe online for banana loaf and checked that we had all the ingredients. I was surprised that I had flour. However we did not have baking soda but Google told Colin that he could use 3 tsp of baking powder in the place of 1 tsp of baking soda.
He did this all on his own without much input from me, just the odd question. I mostly stayed out of the kitchen but was surprised to see him using my lime press to crush nuts for the loaf. Very innovative. I never would have thought of that.
Voila! It looks great and tastes even better. Colin decided not to use a full cup of sugar and only put in 3/4 of a cup, next time he will only use 1/2 cup. Now that was a fun unexpected treat.
As he was putting the flour and nuts back into my baking drawer he noticed that the drawer was broken.
I did have all this stuff in there ( excluding the paper towels, the kettle and the fire extinguisher ). All the beans, quinoa, rice and other items did make the drawer very heavy.
Turns out that there were only two very small screws on each side holding the drawer in place.
Colin spent a very long time trying to figure out how to get the drawer apart so that he could repair it. It will never break down again, as he put in three larger screws on each side.
Looking good. Well that was one way to fill an isolation day.
I would never have expected to see this. Can you imagine growing up with these names?
I leave you with this very sobering thought.

That is a yummy looking banana bread and Collin deserves a compliment. Isn’t it something to come home from a long vacation and find things broken at home. Gremlins at work! Perhaps the lever is intact and the problem lies on the wooden frame if some moisture got in during the winter. With all of us being confined to the indoors we are looking around the house and projects pop up that we otherwise would not notice. Soon the warm temps will bring you outside.
It was very yummy, so we had to freeze half of it. Best to save some for another day. Colin was able to track down the part and as our windows have a twenty year warranty they will show us a new one at no charge. Only took two hours and several phone calls.
It’s always comforting to see how others are spending the time at home. We never found the 14 day isolation long and then when we did have to go “out” it was a fair bit nerve-wracking. After all, I knew we were fine as we had been in isolation. Yikes, such a weird way to think.
Maybe it’s just time for us to slow down and take more time at home and for each other. Tough and challenging times are what create change. I can’t imagine going through this without having the ability to communicate with others so easily. It really does help.

Nancy, I believe that when this is all over we are going to have to find new normal. Life as we knew it may never be the same again. Sometimes I think that I am living in a science fiction movie. Hang in there and stay safe.
Glad Colin was able to fix the drawer. They don’t make things like they used to, do they? We keep finding more “projects”….definitely will need a long holiday at some point.
Do you think that we will ever run out of projects? You two are definitely due for a special vacation when this is all over.

I am thinking about hiring Colin full-time 🙂 We had bought some green bananas in the US as you are allowed to bring them across the border but they took forever to ripen and when they did they were too ripe.
That last line of defense poster made perfect sense to me. I made our face masks yesterday.
And I agree with Nancy & Doug that going out now feels weird. I was supposed to have blood drawn this week to check my A1c but checking to make sure it it is fine feels like not enough to risk going to the clinic. You can’t get blood drawn while social distancing.
Congrats on making your own masks. Good for you. Yes going out after driving for two weeks and then isolating for two weeks is going to be different. I think that walking around here will be fine but once we head to a grocery store we will need to be very cautious. Masks, gloves and sanitizer.
First thing I saw when I walked into my kitchen this morning was very ripe bananas! Colin inspired me so I made a loaf of banana bread – not a favorite for me but Rex likes it and Sam was very happy to take 3 thick slices home after he delivered some groceries to us. It is a win for all of us.
