More Que Pasa
Carnaval has started. It is going to be a huge party as it was cancelled last year due to the pandemic. Covid numbers are down at the moment but Sinaloa is still in the yellow zone with green being the best. We personally will not be attending anything. As you know we have done different things over the years. We will be content to listen to the bands from across the water and perhaps see a few fireworks. It was much more fun that last few years fireworks being on a boat and enjoying the magic all around us. We have also attended the Sunday parade at least three times in person and seen others on TV. I think this year the parade is going to be extra special.
Every Carnaval has a theme and many giant monigotes. This years theme is Lanao which roughly means vessel or ship. Here are a few photos that I have ‘stolen’ from the internet. There are a few that were taken at night and the one at the Plazuela Machado is magnificent. I can’t find the night photos that I saw somewhere. I will keep looking. Meanwhile, enjoy.
Both my and Colin’s fathers were Ukrainian. We no longer have any ties but our hearts go out to all Ukrainians both in the midst of this horrific war and others around the world who hearts are breaking.

We were downtown on the historical Charleston peninsula today. The old City Hall is decked out with the SC State Palmetto Flag and the Ukrainian Flag flying along side of it. The College of Charleston (the oldest municipal college in the US) has many Ukrainian students; they along with their friends were waving Ukrainian Flags along the streets, and we were all beeping our horns in the traffic along the way with them. God Bless Ukraine!! Many of the students were sending pictures back to their families in Ukraine of all the ruckus! There is very large international support, financially, emotionally, and militarily, for Ukraine. I can’t get over how young the Ukraine President and his Cabinet and MPs look, maybe in their 20s or 30s.
Colin read that the Ukraine present used to be a comedian. He is doing very well in his new line of work.
You and Colin must be very proud of your Ukrainian heritage! It might be worth researching your Ukrainian ancestry on Ancestry.com. No doubt, a very strong and brave people. Yes, Colin is right; I just read the Ukrainian President is only 44 years old; thank goodness he has a sense of humor; he and other Ukrainians will need that sense of humor to get through this war. Also, he is very smart; just recently, he is trying to convince the head of the European Union to add Ukraine to their group of countries since Ukraine joining NATO is off the table. If the EU takes in Ukraine, it has more protection and will, for sure, break Russia from ever recovering in the economic and banking communities. By the way, the Ruble presently is worth less than one US cent.

Looks like they go all out for their carnival! What is going on in Ukraine looks pretty crazy, hope it is resolved soon.

Thank you for sharing that Carnaval has begun. You’ve given me a new topic to research & learn about which I appreciate very much…..those monigotes are something else! How do the girls do with fireworks?
The girls are not bothered by the fireworks no by loud noises. Now they are also used to ATV’s driving past and the horses and their smells.
