Kitchen countertops….
….are being built by Adriatic Granite out of Vernon. The first thing was to chose the type of material from granite to marble. We went with Silestone which is a natural quartz which is non porous, so stains and germs will not be absorbed below the surface plus it is also scratch resistant. You have to pick the grain you like, the colour, etc. Hard choice to make right at the outset but we did it. In fact we went with two different colours. One for the main kitchen countertop area and a much more jazzy choice for the upper bar area. After the product is ordered you wait and wait. Then when your kitchen is almost complete Adriatic Granite comes in and does a template which will then be transferred to your piece or in our case, pieces of Slestone.
Colin being the artist that he is had designed a unique plan which did not quite adapt to the template on site. We were invited by Adriatic Granite to come down to their plant last Friday morning to discuss and measure and see what could be done.
It is a huge place full of the noise of many different pieces of equipment. Nothing was cut for a very very long time, instead it was measure and re measure. They are artists in their own field. Mitch, one of the owners is a European craftsman with vision and creativity. As he worked with Colin he was patiently teaching his boys as he likes to call them.
After the first four times I lost count of the measurements being done for the precise curves required. That is Mitch on the right. He was working extremely carefully and with great skill to make Colin's plan come into being. We got so very very close, we were happy but yet Mitch checked and re checked and looked and looked before giving the okay for that first cut.
This machine cuts through the granite like butter. Even so we all held our breathe as the laser light led the machine.
Here are the first few cuts. We are now committed.
You can't tell from this photo but there are many different colors in this piece. So many steps involved to get to this point and many many more to get the counter ready for installation on August 24th. It was a real learning experience and we are so happy we went with Adriatic Granite!
