Update to the Mazatlan Road Travel Update

A few days ago I posted a series of emails between people regarding an SUV which was attacked leaving Mazatlan on MX15.  Here is the story written by the woman driving the SUV.  She is a Canadian and was traveling with her elderly parents.  MAZATLAN TO EDMONTON ABexplains what actually happened.  I find it interesting that the banditos did not do the shooting but rather the Mexican Marines.

In my mind this is not a part of the gang wars but rather a local criminal element preying on those traveling alone.  This story is similar to the one that happened this past April to a Victoria couple.  It seems both vehicles stopped at a Pemex on the outskirts of Mazatlan and then were stopped just a few miles along the autopista. It appears that someone at the Pemex alerted “friends” that a single vehicle with elderly people were heading their way.  I know exactly where these incidents took place and it is a good place for such an event to happen.  As you come onto the toll road to Culiacan there is the large Police facility on the right (daring robbers I say) and about 12-13 kms further along is an overpass with a sign indicating a road to the beaches Mazatlan North.  We have taken this road off the autopista into Mazatlan once and it has many small side roads so an easy place for the banditos to disappear to.  It is the toll road but not quite the toll road as the first toll booth is a another 15-20 kms further down.  In fact we slept there a few years ago when all the Mazatlan Pemex’s where full.  Never again.

I can’t see how this would be a problem heading towards Mazatlan as there are no Pemex stations or other facilities from which someone could warn a bandito friend…..unless they were hanging out at that toll booth.  Bottom line…..be vigilant and travel  with 1 or 2 others!
