I have a hot date

Do you remember my June 1st post when I asked ” What would June bring?”

Well it has brought me the date of June 27th.  I only found out yesterday that my hip surgery is now scheduled.  I believe that there was a cancellation and probably because I kept calling and asking for a date they gave it to me.  Now I am running around trying to get everything done that needs to be done.  I see the surgical optimizing team on Thursday and the anesthetist on Friday.

Does anyone have any comments on having a spinal anesthetic versus general anesthetic?  I am scared to have the spinal as I don’t want to hear anything, I mean what if I wake up during surgery and can’t tell them that I can hear everything?  On the other hand if I do have the spinal I am likely to be less dopey and can get on with the healing sooner.  I have to decide by Friday morning.  I really would appreciate your input.

Thanks to Black Mountain Sunrooms our house is now leak free both from the roof and under the basement and our windows no longer smile.  They worked for four hours on Sunday to finish up.

Looking good indeed.

    Hi Contessa;
Your blog keeps me entertained and it is so informative. I have had two spinals for two different operations. My knee replacement and last year a back operation to replace two discs round out my spinal cord which has become a triangle shape. I wouldn’t have any other kind of anesthetic as you come out of it very fast and if you do wake up, which I did with my knee replacement they just gave me a shot of something and I was back asleep. No throwing up, no out of it feeling, all was good. Hope this helps. Take care,
    Sharon

Sharon….how nice to hear from you again. Your advice does help, a lot. Gracias.

      Cheryl….I am so torn.

Marty….I don;t know that the general is any more dangerous these days but I hate the groggy feeling. I haven’t had many surgeries but have never got sick except when I got my tonsils out as a child. I still remember the trauma.

Mary…..thanks for checking in on me. Intuition is a good thing my friend. Hope to see you on the Isla this winter.

Chris….I won’t tell Juan but I did read today that urination problems can be a side effect of having a spinal. Thanks for the laugh.

George…best news ever as it means we will be out of here end of October.

Longdog….I so hope to be pain free. I will be ready for Mexico for certain.

If you don’t have any pre-existing health problems that would preclude the general, I’d go for that!

Contessa, I totally agree with Sharon. I had the spinal with my knee replacement and it was so nice to wake up not sick or groggy. And they can keep you sedated enough to not hear anything-I remember nothing. And I think it’s much safer-no ventilator, no paralyzing drugs, no risk of waking up but not able to tell them you feel everything. (A young man I know had that happen and he now has PTSD) General anesthesia is dangerous stuff-they take lots of precautions, but why risk it if you don’t have to. If I ever need surgery again, I hope I have the option for a spinal.

Great news Contessa! I like having dates and plans, so I do not have to wait around…wondering! And you should have some great healing time before Mexico:-)
AS for my thoughts…the least you put your body through the better you are! and follow your intuition:-)

Juan had the spinal for his knee surgery. They gave him a mild anesthesia, he acted goofy, they rolled him over and gave him about four injections. The only side effect was that after the surgery, which was minor compared to hip replacement, he peed in the car and didn’t know it. Still doesn’t know it to this day 🙂 Don’t ever say a word. Glad you have a date and I know it will all be great!

  6. Good news on the surgery update.
No advice on the anesthetic thou.

So glad you will have your hip replacement soon. Happy for you. This means you will be able to go to Mazatlan next fall.
I am sure your surgery will go well. I will send you positive thoughts.

congrats on date. re anesthesia……had an injured foot fixed 4 years ago. spinal is not an option for me due to previous myelitis and they did not want to give me a general due to respiratory. so decision was freezing the foot from ankle down and use of conscious sedation. never felt, heard or was aware of a thing….totally out as far as i was concerned.

general only way to do last surg. and definitely a little groggy afterwards, but i think good amt. was the pain and anti nausea meds. i’d go with whatever they felt was best for my health, recovery and success of the surgery. if a spinal gets you up and mobile sooner…great option.
