Yet another crisis

I received a frantic call from the Alberta Health Home Care system yesterday afternoon.  Did I know where my Dad was?  I knew he was out and that he should be home by then.  They were there to take off his elastic stockings.   I told them I would call back.  No answer on anyones cell phones.  Finally my brother called back.  He said that Dad had been take by ambulance over 4 hours ago to a hospital.  He had fallen in the street and that is all he knew.  Why had no one called me?

So I started calling all the Edmonton Hospitals.  I finally found him.  He had been waiting in Emergency for close to 4.5 hours and had yet to see a doctor.  Plus my younger sister was with him.  In fact she was with him at the time of the incident.  He had accompanied her to an appointment and on leaving the building his walker went flying and then he followed landing on the left side of his head and onto his left side of his body.  For some reason she did not notice the three steps that went down to street level 🙁 He only sees with one eye and when you are pushing a walker you can’t see in front of it.  So off he went by ambulance.

Long story short once he was finally seen by an MD he has a CT scan, an MRI and numerous xrays.  Fortunately nothing was broken but he was traumatized enough to be admitted to hospital.   However the hospital is full so he is still in emergency over 26 hours later.  No one came tell me how he is doing as it breaks all the privacy laws.  I can’t speak to him.  Finally my sister is going back tonight and I will then get an update.

At one point last night when there was talk of severe trauma I started looking up flights but I really am not able to fly yet nor function on my own.

I really would like to be done with all the drama and stress in my life right now.  Meanwhile poor Dad.  I asked my sister to call me from his bedside later tonight so I can at least speak to him.  You can imagine what was going through my head last night, first Mom and now Dad.  There has to be a reason all these things are happening when I can’t be there, but I have no idea what it could be.

Oh, I’m so sorry to read this. It’s definitely difficult when someone you love is injured, but then to have the added stress of not being able to be there is very rough.

I hope that once you speak with your sister you will feel a little better.

I’m sending good thoughts and wishes your way.

Sorry to hear about your Dad, hope that your sister has good news for you. It’s hard worrying about your family and being unable to to be there to see to things yourself.

So sorry, especially at a time when you need to concentrate on getting well! When I was in ER that first time they were putting ICU patients in the ER because of the crowding. The ER is new so it had a little extra room. Hope you got to talk to your dad.

Oh man. Aging parents. Very sorry to read this. Feeling helpless is almost as bad as being there. Sure hope your father is able to speak to you on the phone in short order.
We’re meekly going along at an age where neither my wife nor I are “aging parents” (yet) and both sets of our parents are long gone. It’s certainly a mixed blessing.

  6. Geez Louise and Jumpin’ Jehoshaphat! Feel free to start having an easy life at any time! Healing vibes headed toward your dad’s noggin.
