COCONUT OIL

Do you use it?  If so, how so?

We picked this up at Costco yesterday.

Yesterday it was liquid from the heat and today as we have rain it is now solid due to the chill in the air.  It can be used in either form and requires no refrigeration and lasts forever.  Someone suggested that it might be good for my skin when I get a rash.  I have heard of it but never researched it before. Seems like it is a bit of a miracle product.

Worth a try I think.

Here is a link I found that seems straight to the point.  I like the comments at the end describing the various uses.  I am interested in how many of you are using this product and what if any benefits you have derived.

I will have to check to see if I can buy it easily in Mexico or if I have to pack a few jars in with me.

I cook with it, make my creams and lotions with it, and I’m going to try feeding it to Chloe for her arthritis. We get a huge one at Costco too, but the brand they carry in the US is Nutiva. My nails are nicer because I use lotion with coconut oil. Good stuff!

Marty…but now and what do you cook with it?

We just use it as another cooking oil. It’s great for stir-fry, and for using in place of butter on anything that has to be lined before being baked (muffin tins etc). My Father in law uses it for his skin and as a sunscreen. It’s Not good as a sunscreen. He ended up looking like a lobster one sunny Okanagan day.

It’s available at Mega and at the Saturday organic market. I use it for cooking, skin cream, and contitioner. I love it.

Chuck and I have been cooking with coconut oil for about 2 years now and use it like any other oil, ditto for baking! Also, I have psoriosis (sp?) very dry skin patches but not severe. I used to rub coconut oil on the dry patches, with gratifying results. Now, especially in winter when my skin is even drier… I rub some all over when I get out of the shower. No miracles happen, but my skin just really seems much softer and less dry and itchy. However, it is very easy to get too much on your skin, so use sparingly! I use LuAnn’s Coconut oil, a smaller size that I buy at WalMart. We full time in our RV so smaller size is important!

A while back Dr. Oz had an nutritionist on and she was promoting the benefits of coconut oil and she said it was even effective in treating vaginal yeast infection,so Dr.Oz asked her how much you use and she said it depends how big your salad bar is .Dr. Oz almost swallowed his tongue.very funny.

Good friend of ours cooks with it, uses it as a lotion, and gives it to her dog. She swears by it.

Mostly I use it in place of oils. There is a chocolate you can make. It involved coconut oil, honey and cocoa. Good for people with allergies! Coincidentally, someone on one of my Facebook pages shared this link about coconut oil and pets.

I use it on my skin – hasn’t helped the wrinkles but seems to soak in pretty quickly even if I use too much. I have also tryed oil pulling – basically swishing (not gargling) the oil in your mouth for 15-20 min and spitting it out – supposedly it’s pulling the toxins out of your mouth/body. We love it on toast especially with sugar & cinnamon and also use it to cook with. Certainly can’t hurt! So glad you’re feeling better….

Who knew coconut oil was so popular? I thought I was on top of the latest but obviously not. Thanks for all of your comments and suggestions.

The coconut oil ….yes, good stuff. I have used ghee for years ….works in a similar fashion, but not quite as many healing properties as coconut. Great for cooking with. The Internet will be a good resource for its uses. I have heard coconut oil and ghee are the ONLY safe fats to cook with.

How is it going with the coconut oil, Contessa? Right about the same time you mentioned it I started using it . . . but so far, I don’t like it too much! I really don’t like the taste of it in anything I’ve used it for cooking with. On rice, stir fry, on toast . . . blech! Tried a bit on my skin and within minutes I had bees swarming around me and I had my first bee sting in years. I’m not saying it isn’t good for you . . . but I just haven’t found a way to use it that works for us!

Tris……hmmm….not so good for you. I haven’t used it on my skin because of all the wasps and I don’t think I will. Maybe on face at night. We are using it in food a little here and a little there. Not so much that you can taste it. One day I used it on a piece of toast and I liked it.
