ATTACKED yet again…
…too hot to walk the girls (which I am not doing anyway) so I took them for a golf cart ride.
With temperatures just over 33C, I was driving along trying to create a breeze and I got attacked. Yes another wasp bite, this time on my ring finger on the left hand. My knuckle is so swollen I can’t get my rings off. I can see 3 inflamed puncture marks. No wonder it hurt so much.
The wasps have become so bad that the media have become involved. Now we may become known as the Valley of the Wasps.
Lots of stories here and suggestions on how to control them.
It is perfect weather to sit outside and just enjoy but not possible with all of these wasps. The poor girls can’t even lay out in the sun without being buzzed.
Are there more wasps then normal in your area?

What is your solution for killing wasps with cider vinegar?? They have been really bad here on Vancouver Island too, apparently they like this warm weather too…
Susie, good to be hearing from you on a regular basis again. The apple cider vinegar is for the fruit flies. You put some in a glass, cover it with saran wrap and poke about 5-7 tiny holes in the saran wrap. The fruit flies can go in but not come out. As to the wasps, we get those yellow traps from a local hardware store and they sure do help collect them. Details here.

It’s funny, here on the Westside the wasps are way down in numbers. We have only had a dozen or so in our traps in more than a week. We used to get that many in a day in mid August.
Rod….you sent them over the lake to our place, I know you did 😉
We seem to be kinda Waspless over here in south western Ontario. Oh there’s a few around I guess but we don’t often seem them. We will have to deal with the Yellow Jackets when we get to Congress. I’ve always had a fairly good rapport with wasps, hornets, & bees but accidents do happen……..
Oh, that was me, Al on that last comment. Kelly’s name & pic always comes us.
Al/Kelly…who follows you everywhere…..lucky you with no wasps.
ButterBean Carpenter….How do you find the time to analyze what is bitting you. Good job on getting rid of the hives. Yes I read about Kevin’s adventure….good thing his mom coughed up the money.
George…and you should know being camped out in the back 40 at Camp Awesome.
Gail….welcome to the comment section of the blog. Household ammonia is being added to my first aid kit. Gracias!
Elaine….be careful out there. We have one doxie who is severely allergic and her throat plugs right up. Too bad the wasps are affecting our enjoyment of nature.
And that last word was supposed to be ‘up’.
Howdy Contessa,
OOWWWW!!!! Not again!!!
Yes!!! Joyce was just saying, after her SECOND sting of the season, that it seems like this is the YEAR OF THE WASPS, on the RunningStar Ranch, in Coleman county TEXAS !!! The YELLOWJACKETS, GUINEA WASPS(SMALL YELLOWJACKETS), RED WASPS, RED WITH BLACK WINGS and BLACK WASPS are COVERING EVERY watering hole & trough on the whole place !!! Seems like every year it’s another insect or varmint…. They ALL attack her !!!! We have ‘killed’ over 100 nests and there are a lot we haven’t found… When the leaves fall off there will be a lot more hanging in the trees !!!
So sorry to hear about your latest episode and hope you get over it quickly !!!
Did you hear about Kevin Reads ‘wasp episode’ in Saskatchewan?? He ALMOST had an allergic shock with his sting, so he checked into the ALLERGY PEN; $150 !!! Of course, OLD SCROUNGE found it for $110…
Maybe you will have a better year in 2014 and have many HAPPY DAYS !!!!!!!!!!
As Kelly/Al said not many wasps here in southern ontario that we have noticed this year.
When you get stung, apply household ammonia on it as soon as possible. Will stop pain immediately, and you should have no rash or swelling. I keep some in my first aid kit. Works on the dogs too, but make sure they don’t lick it-just rinse it off of them after a few minutes.
I have been avoiding the wasps and yellow jackets all summer seems …I’m so allergic to them…and they have definitely been in abundance this year….my biggest fear is not me …its tucker he loves to chase them 🙁
I never sent them anywhere Contessa. I tried hard to trap as many as I could and left them in the traps to notify all their buddies that the same fate awaited them.
Rod….you can keep the bears and I am happy with the wasps.
