A very sad story about a whale
Last week on Wednesday, June 4th, a whale beached itself on the Isla. Yes, my very own Isla off of Mazatlan. The video is in Spanish but you can see how so many folks tried to help this creature. First they tried to pull it out head first but in the end they pulled it out by the tail.
Sadly it did not survive, perhaps it was ill. It ended coming back to the Isla ( Stone Island ) and landed on the rocks near Chivos. That is the area where the sun set in all those shots I posted all winter. Here is the video of the whale crashed onto the rocks. This happened last Thursday, the day after the rescue. No need to watch it past a few moments.
There was a report yesterday, see below, explaining that the whale will be impossible to bury. You can imagine the smell. Once, many years ago, in Lo de Marcus a dead whale washed ashore. It was a mile away form the RV and it was difficult to breathe.
Meanwhile a friend who lives on the Isla made a comment, see below, on the above story. Not sure what is going to happen next but I do feel sorry for the folks having to deal with the stench. Such a sad ending to what started out as a great rescue story.
More details and some great photos can be found on my friend Nancy’s blog post.

Such a sad story, sorry to hear the whale did not make it. Hope the issue is resolved.
George, it really is sad. I know you had posted about the rescue but now with this ending I felt I had to post the rest of the story.
That’s a large piece of flesh to be buried. It will have to be very large and most of all deep as seepage can occur at shorelines. Six feet won’t do it. One that was buried in Oregon was 11 feet deep. Yikes.
A dead Sperm Whale washed up on Long Beach on Vancouver Island near where my in-laws lived many years ago. The smell was so bad you could only approach it from the upwind side. It took months to disappear. I can only imagine what it would be like in hot weather!
