A new but very noisy neighbor

For over a week now I am being awoken just after dawn.  Later in the day it’s the same repetitive noise, over and over.  Sometimes it’s enough to give me a headache.  It’s difficult to concentrate on what I am doing but the worst is not being able to get back to sleep in the morning.

Rat – a tat, rat -a – tat, rat – a- tat and over and over and over again.  I read that the constant pecking is a mating call.  Well I sure hope this guy finds a gal real soon.

Finally after much searching by listening for the pecking sound, he was spotted. It is an electrical wood pole that was very recently put up.

But he is a good distance from us. The red shows where he hangs out pecking the pole all day. This shot was taken from my front porch.

Can you imaging the racket if you lived right next to the pole.  Hopefully those folks are hard of hearing.

We had one yesterday as well! He was eating out of our suet dispenser which he emptied. He did not linger but flew off somewhere. I have not heard him since.

~ Croft, we used to put suet out for the woodpeckers when we lived in Vancouver. We soon stopped as they could eat that brick of suet in a few days.

~ He is far away and even at 4:30 AM with just the one window open I can here it. A very very loud pecking noise. Yesterday we had the windows closed because of the cold and I could still hear it.

We too had one a few weeks back. Couldn’t really hear him from inside though. If the house is buttoned up, we don’t hear much from outside.
That’s a long ways away to hear a woodpecker!
