Lunar eclipse, early Dec. 21, 2010!

I could write about the facts re the eclipse but it has been in the news and is easily Googled.   Suffice to say it was so rare as to be the first time since 1638 when astronomer Galileo was under house arrest for suggesting that the Earth circled the sun!!!  We have come quite a way since then!  The next lunar eclipse with good viewing from the USA will occur in 2014, though stargazers eager for the next eclipse during a winter solstice will have to wait until Dec. 21, 2094.

So here on the Isla it was a clear night and the moon was directly overhead.  The eclipse commenced about 10:30PM ( Monday, Dec.20) local time.  There were a few hardy rvers who stayed awake for the spectacle in both of the parks.  I think we finally got to bed sometime before 2:30AM (Tuesday, Dec.21).  One of the great benefits of the full moon was watching the efflorescence as the waves broke on the shore.  I can never get enough of watching that, a most special show of Mother Nature in itself.
