Don’t panic!!!
Dear Mom, Dad, Mommio, family and friends,
We are just fine! Yes there was an incident here in Mazatlan on Sunday afternoon where a fellow from Penticton, just a two hour drive from our home in Canada, got hit in the leg via stray bullets but we were not involved and I repeat, we are fine. I’m sure you saw it all on the TV news Tuesday evening. Interesting that this happened on Sunday but only hit the news Tuesday. Here is a translation of the story from the Mazatlan Noroeste by a reporter on the online Mazatlan Messenger. It is sad that this happened to a fellow Canadian and we wish him and his family well.
Before you start with the emails and the phone calls please remember that just a month ago Vancouver had its own outbreak of gang violence with 10 people shot on Oak Street. Interesting enough we were in Mazatlan on Monday within a mile of where this shooting occurred and heard nothing of it. In fact we will be right back in the area today, Wednesday. We can’t live our life in fear and can honestly say that we have never felt safer in Mexico. We go about our business in a normal manner whether here or at home. No one has control over being hit by a car or a stray bullet. So please don’t panic, don’t ask us to come home and don’t worry. Instead be happy for us that we are able to get away and enjoy life.

Bravo! What a nice way to describe what happened and how you live with it. I get a lot of questions about safety here and it is hard to tell what I feel without sounding aggressive. Saludos!
Like you said there is crime everywhere. So travel safe, be careful and enjoy life while we can!
A young highway patrolman was gunned down ten miles from here, in sleepy Three Forks, Montana. The gunman then drove away, parked about 10 miles down the road and took his own life. Police officers from all over the United States and Canada came to his funeral. These things happen everywhere! From the description in the article, the bullets were aimed specifically at the young man, not at the bystanders. I’m sure you’ve heard about all the drive-by shootings in Los Angeles-they don’t care who they hit.
When I tell people we go to Mazatlan often, the first thing they ask about is safety-and they really aren’t ready to believe me when I assure them it’s just as safe or safer than the US. Yep, the media sure does blow things up!
Loved your posts about the Dorado-makes my mouth water!
Well said.. couldn’t agree more. Quick question, where exactly did the shooting happen? I have been to Mazatlan every year for a decade and am returning next week, but I couldn’t exactly pinpoint the location via pictures. Can anyone fill me in?
Hola Kurt,
Glad to hear to you are coming down…look us up, email or whatever if you have a moment and perhaps we can meet up. The shooting incident happened about 1:35PM on Sunday just at the Ley’s shopping mall, just off Av. Ejercito Mexicano and Rio Piaxtla. If you check out the link ‘story’ it will give you a mini map of the location.
