The next few hours
Our hearts were breaking and the tears were flowing. What to do? We knew that we wanted to donate what we could to Amigos de Los Animales here in Mazatlan. This group of volunteers gives their all to dogs and cats in the city. On their website they have a huge wishlist of things that would help them do their job. By the way they do take donations online. So we decided that the best way we could honor our girls was to donate their things to help other animals. We spent the next few hours going through the RV and collecting items.
Meanwhile about the same time that this was all happening with the girls, Colin’s mother was admitted to hospital in Winnipeg, Manitoba. We have called her Mommio for years and years because she is so hip and with it and now she is 102 years and 5 months. Rather devastating to all of us to see her freedom curtailed. It appears to be a comedy of errors that got her hospitalized but now she is there and not doing well at all. All we know is that it is imperative for us or for Colin to get there as soon as possible.
We had travel plans to leave here Monday, April 3rd with the girls. Now it is just the two of us. We are now leaving tomorrow morning at 5AM. We have no idea if we will stop once in the US, store the RV and fly to Winnipeg but that depends on us being able to extend our travel medical insurance. Or will we travel home and then head to Manitoba. It is all up in the air. It depends on how stable Mommio is. All we know is that we need to pack up ASAP and hit the road and make our plans on the fly based on the facts as they happen.
We miss our girls with each breath we take and our hearts have a big hole in them. I plan to keep posting photos of them for a long while as we have so many to share.
Thank you for all your blog comments, emails and hugs, they are all helping.

Oh Contessa, my tears are falling. I have been thinking about you a lot since I read your other post this morning. Your girls were truly loved and I know they will be in your hearts forever.
I hope Colin’s mother will be okay and that you two have a safe trip home.
I keep choking up every time I think of your girls and what you and Colin are going through. And now, this with Mommio and you won’t get the time to breathe on your trip home… Just *HUGS* Drive safe and keep us posted.
When it rains, it pours. Drive safely. Very lucky shelter to get your contribution, nice after all the love the girls have given you. You pay it forward in their memory.
Cheers
Just one day at a time.
Hope Mommio gets stabilized quickly. She is quite the classy lady. Always loved your stories about her. Hugs from White Rock.
Wish we were there to help. 🙁

What a wonderful donation of the girl’s things to the shelter. I’m sure it was very much appreciated. So sorry about Colin’s momma. Sending prayers to her and to you both as you head home. Tears flow when I read your blog posts these last couple of days. Please know that you are not alone. As pet owners, we’ve been thru this many times. It’s so heartbreaking – hurts – miss them – but thankful for all the memories. You gave them so much love!!!! Love you & sending lots of hugs!!!! xoxo
You might consider donating the dog items from home to http://mazatlananimalrescue.com/ They are our favorite Mazatlan animal charity, they are amazing. You can call them if you see a lost dog, they post photos on Facebook and get them reunited with their owners or adopted out. Many animals are transported to Canada and the US for adoptions. They run a huge no kill shelter with more than a hundred dogs and I don’t know how many cats. They have been instrumental in reducing the number of fertile animals in Mazatlan. We donate to them regularly. You should also follow their Facebook page https://www.facebook.com/mazatlananimalrescues/ and attend some of their fundraisers like the always fun Bow Wow Meow.
It is so nice of you two to help these great charities.
We’ll be thinking of you as you head home, hopefully all will be well with Colin’s mother.
xoxo
Safe travels! A difficult time, now more so. Again, thinking of you, hoping for a positive outcome.
Oh boy, this is a real test, now with Colin’s Mom not doing well. More prayers for safety, peace and healing for all!!

I KNOW HOW HARD THIS IS FOR YOU BOTH AND I WAS THINKING THAT YOU DID ALL THIS IN A WONDERFUL WAY FOR THE GIRLS. IF YOU HAD HAD TO PUT ONE DOWN BECAUSE OF ILLNESS, THE OTHER WOULD NOT HAVE UNDERSTOOD OR COPED WELL AT ALL. SO THIS WAS THE BEST THING YOU COULD HAVE DONE FOR EACH OF THE GIRLS. IT DOESN’T MAKE IT ANY EASIER FOR YOU BUT MAYBE IT DID AS YOU WON’T HAVE TO GO THROUGH ALL THIS AGAIN.
LOVED WHAT YOU DID WITH ALL THEIR TOYS, BEDS, ETC. I TOOK ALL ZULIN’S DOG FOOD AND MOST OF HIS TOYS TO THE SHELTER. THEN I REALIZED I HAD ENOUGH POINTS TO GET A FREE 40 POUND BAG OF DOG FOOD SO WENT OVER TO SCRAPS AND PICKED IT UP AND TOOK IT TO THE SHELTER ABOUT A WEEK LATER. I HAD 26 METAL BOWLS AND 8 PLASTIC ONES. ALSO TOOK ALL THE TOWELS FOR BATHING, ETC. IF YOU EVER GET TO MY APARTMENT IN EDMONTON, YOU’LL SEE DOG TOYS SET OUT ALL OVER THE PLACE, ALMOST AS ORNAMENTS. CRAZY BUT WHO CARES. I SENT A BUNCH OF DOGGY STUFF OVER TO ST. VINCENT’S WITH ONE OF THE LOADS THEY PICKED UP. I EVEN SENT SHIPPED BACK ALL THE EQUIPMENT I HAD TO CCI WHICH WAS JUST GENTLY USED. WOULD YOU BELIEVE THAT I ONLY FINISHING CUTTING UP THE LAST TWO CCI VESTS LAST WEEK? WE’RE NOT ALLOWED TO JUST THROW THEM OUT IN CASE SOMEONE DECIDES TO USE IT FOR THEIR DOG.
HOPE YOU HAVE A GOOD DRIVE. THAT WILL SEEM VERY STRANGE FOR YOU AND WILL ALSO TAKE TIME TO GET USED TO IT. IF YOU GET TOO TEARY EYED COLIN, YOU’LL HAVE TO PULL OVER SO THAT YOU CAN DRY YOUR EYES SO YOU ARE SAFE. EVERYTHING YOU DO WILL BE DIFFERENT FOR YOU SO WILL TAKE TIME TO GET USED TO.
I KNOW YOU WILL BE TIRED AND EMOTIONAL BUT IF YOU CAN DROP ME A LINE JUST TO LET ME KNOW HOW YOU TWO ARE REALLY DOING, PLEASE DO. LOOKS AS IF THE WEATHER WILL BE GOOD FOR YOUR TRAVELS.
LOVE AND HUGS,
Hi, Contessa,
I just want you to know I am thinking about you. I know it was a hard day today with your Dad’s service, coupled with everything else that’s going on. And then you’ve got to get up at the crack of dawn and drive for 12 hours!! I am wishing for you lots of strength and energy for an easy trip.
Don’t worry about writing me back, please. Too much going on!! Just wanted you to know that you are in my thoughts….
xoxox,
Suzanne
