Que pasa

Thanks for all of your comments the past few posts.  I really appreciate them and most especially the ones dealing with tips on using my new iPhone.  For those of you who have one and didn’t see all the comments you might want to go back and read the tips.  And if you have more please add them 😎   Just to be clear on my post yesterday, the title was in reference to what the people standing in the square in Barcelona were chanting in unison ” I am not afraid” the day after the attack.

Sadly there is no news on the laptop situation until next Thursday.  I can’t believe that the only Apple store here in Kelowna only has one tech and he called in sick on Friday and is away now until Thursday.  Somehow I do not believe that he was ill but rather just added an extra day to his vacation.

The smoke has returned and we just have to deal with it.  Colin was able to get a few jobs completed this week.  Tomorrow he has a home with a view shoot to do in Oliver  for an architect, about two hours away.  So hard to tell what the smoke situation will be there.  The homeowner will be calling here at 6:30AM to let us know if it is a go or not.

Are any of you going to be watching the solar eclipse on Monday?

Just saw this today.  These are new sleep capsules that have been opened at Terminal 1 airport in Mexico City for those who need a place to rest for a few hours.  Could you sleep on one of these?

I certainly couldn’t.  I am too claustrophobic.  Click here for the full article.

There are kids running around outside screaming that they lost their drone and does anyone know where it landed?  I am talking tiny kids, like less than seven.  Gosh I sure hope that it didn’t land on my neighbors brand new Lincoln.

Just had a bit of a chat with a good friend who lives in the US but is actually in Canada at the moment.  Turns out she was dictating her text while I was painstakingly typing my words out.  I have to look into this dictation thing.  I wondered how she was typing so fast.  It was a fun thing to do.

Time to dash as we have an event I need to get ready for this evening.

Yet another effect of the flooding.

Having a snooze beside Colin in the RV.  Not sure when it was taken but they sure are cute and we continue to miss them.

Jim dictates everything on his Android phone. Even our grocery list. I’ve always been a fast typist so I still type. Smoke is bad here also. Not going to be much left of your land and mine. Love those girls.

Wonder how dictating text can be perfect when there are different dialects in English pronunciation according to where you live. For example, we use “ya’ll” quite a bit around here and drop our “r” at the end of a word, such as, instead of “ever” it sounds like “eva”. Also, only in the low country of South Carolina (Beach does this quite often because he was born in the low country) does a native make two syllables out of one syllable words, instead of “please” it sounds like “ple-ase” or instead of “four” it sounds like “fo-wa”. The locals call it Charlestonese.

If you get apps. Make sure you always get them from the App Store. That way, chances are they won’t be a virus or a Trojan horse app.

My 3 favourite apps are the clock flashlight app. The phone turns into a dimmable clock and if you pick up the I phone and shake it, it becomes a flashlight. Very useful when traveling. And anytime at night.

I also love Flipboard. It is an app that makes a custom virtual magazine with the topics you love, like photography, travel, music etc. Any number of hundreds if not thousands of topics. Your choice!

The other app I love is gas buddy. It tells you where the cheapest gas or diesel is in the area that you are at. It is very accurate since it is users that post the prices.

One more… card scan. It lets you scan business cards and add it to your address book. Love this one. There are certain cards that you need to type in manually sometime since the text is not recognized. But over all, a very nice app.

    Cheers!

    Greetings Contessa and Colin,

I am very involved on a voluntary basis with Simply Computing here in Kamloops.

I mail out the seminar reminders for them to over 700 on my list. Simply offers
free seminars weekly on Mac computers, iPads, iphones, etc. I know our
Tech guy here is very capable and when he was on holidays for two weeks
the sales people can only help in some areas and everything was left for
our very efficent and capable tech Anthony. I am sure the same thing happens
in Kelowna, etc. These are very qualified people and each store can only
afford to hire one of them. So at times customers have to wait for their
devices. We also have a Mac Club here in town of which I am the secretary,
and have done this for years.
One thing about Mac devices, there is help out there and free seminars, a big
plus. So too bad we do not live closer to you, otherwise I would try and help you also.

Good luck and hope all works out in the end.

    Always enjoy your blog. Cheers,

To respond to Dee’s question about wondering how voice recognition can be perfect, well it isn’t perfect, but then neither is my typing. LOL! It does really well with adapting to dialects, as it adapts easily to my southern slang. It even picks up correct use of “then” (used when) versus “than” (used for comparison.)

But when it goes wacky is trying to describe something uncommon. For example, being near Elliston, root cellar capitol of Canada, I was asking someone if the puffin site was located near the root cellars? I dictated this in a text, which came out “route sellers.” When that happens, you just place the tip of your finger on the screen immediately following the error, backspace, and correct it, just like you would a typo.

It’s pretty phenomenal, even adding punctuation on command.

  6. I couldn’t use those pods, I too am claustrophobic. We did stay in the tiniest hotel room ever though, the Yotel for several hours at the airport. It was ok, not claustrophobic as it had a shower and a tv and was like a tiny bedroom instead, worth the money for a nap and a shower to feel human between long layover flights. I keep finding great things for my iphone. Like the flipp app which is a free app which helps you grocery shop. You type in what you need ie butter and it pulls all the flyers from your area to show you which store has that on sale (if you want to stock up)
