Yesterday and Semana Santa

This is the blog post  that you would have received last evening had I not fallen asleep on the sofa 🙄  So be sure to check back for today’s post later this evening.

Semana Santa is slowly ramping up here on Stone Island.  I took my first walk in over a week ( due to my cold, I still have the cough ) on Sunday afternoon and got these photos for you.  Because it was a Sunday is was busy as opposed to yesterday, Monday, which was quiet.  More folks than normal but still quiet compared to the week ahead.

Selling shade and cocos.

Parking and surfboards for rent.  That lean to on the right is selling a variety of  non alcoholic beverages.

Plastic tables with proper dining room chairs for rent.  These all have to be carted to and from the beach every day.  Right now there are more shaded seating areas than there are people but that will change.

Everything you might want or need is for rent or for sale, including trampolines.  I found two on the beach.

Most families have lots of children with them.

Which one should we buy?

Pony ride anyone?

A vendor and his son take a break. Behind those for rent tables and pink umbrellas, up top of the wall is lean to palapa selling drinks.  This is the area that the boondocker has been in.  Guess he and his RV were not welcome during Semama Santa.

There is all kinds of security, Red Cross and lifeguards walking around watching those in the water.  I can’t imagine this lady all dressed in her whites heading into the surf to rescue someone but I’m sure that she would.

Sunday end of day.

Or maybe the RV guy had planned to leave to avoid the crowds?

I have only been in Mexico one time during Semana Santa and that was on the other side in Quintana Roo in 1998. At that time, the beach in Akumal Bay had barely any people until Semana Santa rolled around and then it got very crowded. Now it is a whole different story and that same beach is packed day in and day out.

I have not been back to that area since April of 2005, but am going back with a friend on April 17th. When I lived there for most of 1998, they were starting to make a lot of changes, and I was always singing the song, “They Paved Paradise & Put up a Parking Lot”. Sadly that is now a total reality.

Contessa, I don’t know if you will be meeting any of the people from Kevin and Ruth’s RV group, but I told another “cyber” friend from Colorado to tell you that Cat from Kansas City said, “Hola”. Wish I could be there to meet all of you in person.
