Happy Canada Day !!

Until 1982 it use to be called Dominion Day but once Canada became fully independent from the United Kingdom it became Canada Day.  We are a young country indeed.

Do you remember this flag?

It is called the Canadian Red Ensign.  There had been 2 previous versions used, with slightly different symbols on the shield,  one from 1868 – 1921, and another from 1921 – 1957.  This was the last official flag used from 1957 until 1965.

The Maple Leaf Flag was inaugurated on February 15th, 1965.

The following words, spoken on that momentous day by the Honourable Maurice Bourget, Speaker of the Senate, added further symbolic meaning to our flag: “The flag is the symbol of the nation’s unity, for it, beyond any doubt, represents all the citizens of Canada without distinction of race, language, belief or opinion.”

I think our flag is a great symbol for Canada, one that stand out no matter where you travel in the world.  Happy Canada Day!

Kevin & Ruth….I don’t think I would want to live anywhere else in the world but being a Canadian certainly gives easy access to the world!

  2. I agree, if someone sees the Canada flag they know it represents Canada. I like it much more than the older flags.

We sure miss the fireworks in Ottawa, they were always spectacular. Probably one of the best fireworks shows we have seen anywhere else. We always say that if you are a Canadian you need to experience Canada Day in Ottawa at least once in your life.

Hope you had a great Canada Day!

    Kevin and Ruth
