It was about 37F in the RV Tuesday morning and it pretty much rained or….
…snowed off and on all day. No accumulations of snow fortunately. But it did snow up at the Grand Canyon. So happy we got two perfect sunshine days for our visit and photos. It was even colder than on our visits.
It was a nasty day best spent inside. So I worked on what else but blog posts and Colin played his guitar. Tuesday was our day to tour Sedona, Cottonwood, Jerome, etc, the regular tourist loop. Not a day to go out. However we did go out to the laundry room here in the park. I managed to get two loads in the washer and then we had a half mile walk to get more quarters. It was sleeting and most unpleasant to be out. At least the laundry got done.
This was the style of our old bedroom lights.
Colin replaced all three with these which match the new dining room fixture. He had other outdoor things to do like replace all the tire sensors but it was not an outside day. One day soon I pray we will be warm again, before we get to the Isla.
Is is not an easy task to keep our RV warm in these extreme conditions. First off we only have single pane windows and a lot of them. We kept the front window blind closed as well as these curtains which are directly behind our driving seats. Their purpose it to keep the heat in the living room or on the other side of the curtain if we are driving.
We are also keeping both blinds down on each of the windows to try and prevent heat loss. I hate not being able to see outside.
For the first time in about 15 years we started to use the 1500 watt baseboard heater we had installed a long while back. It takes a long while to heat up but it does throw heat once warmed up.
We also have had two electric heaters running almost nonstop. We do shut off all sources of heat at night when we go to bed. Of course we have been running our furnace in the morning and just before going to bed when we have our showers but not during the rest of the day.
It took us half a day before realizing that we should shut the door to the bedroom. No sense heating up a room we are not using. That made a huge difference.
I also use a hot water bottle filled with boiling water to put between the sheets before I get in bed. It then keeps my feet warm until I fall asleep.
Wednesday, our last day here in Williams, was mostly cloudy and the forecast was no better in the Sedona area so we stayed in yet again. Of course the 35F temps and frost did not encourage us to leave our cozy nest. We spent the later part of the afternoon putting things away for our trip the next morning. I had a few computers issues that I was going back and forth with my most knowledgeable computer guru so the time passed quickly. I also got three blog posts written so that means that I am up to date but I will still only publish one per day.
First time we have seen this guy. We were going to go to the nightly street show ( gunfight ) put on by the world famous Cataract Creek Gang that George commented about and suggested but it was too dark and way too cold @ 42F.
Instead we caught this lovely sunset and filled up our two 5 gallon water jugs, picked up some fruit and enough wine to get us through the next week.
We just had to have a Mexican dinner on our last night in Williams. We ate at the Fiesta Mexican Grill that is run by the Rodriguez family from Guadalajara, Mexico. Our fish tacos were excellent.
A great way to end our time here on Route 66.
You poor kids; glad you found a hot meal, and that it was good too. Hot food or hot soup will always help fend off the cold. I know you love your favorite wines, but a good bottle of brandy right now to make a hot toddy would help warm you up; I wonder if there is such a thing as brandy in a store in Williams.
I actually have some brandy in the RV, a good French brand, but I usually save it for when we get a cold and cough. There is not a lot of anything in Williams as there is only the one store, a Safeway where I did pick up some wine.
The new lights look nice! I hear it is very warm in Yuma 🙂
Also the Vegas area I have been told. We really like the new lights and of course thy are LED. A more modern look for our old RV.
The weather and temperature in Arizona is all about elevation. And this is not s good time of year for the ones you are in. Too bad you don’t have double pane windows they sure make a huge difference. We manage quite well on the cooler weather with our blue flame heater. Soon you will be warm again.
We have a full month to go before we get to the Isla so we will just do the best we can under the circumstances. Enjoy your journey from East to West.
Two years ago we wanted to stay in Williams but..way too cold. We’d done the north rim and it was cold too, even in late Sept. Too bad we snowbirds are always too late for warm weather up high. We have a GloWarm propane heater and it keeps us toasty even with our high ceilings and single pane windows. Stay warm!
I agree, we snowbirds donm’t always get the best weather but we have no choice. We can’t afford the time nor the fuel to come here mid summer. Will have to chat with you about the GloWarm. You are full of good ideas:) You two should ride your bike over to the Isla for lunch one day.
So glad you enjoyed the grand canyon…its something everyone should see in their lifetime. Several years ago we rented a car in Vegas and spent several days on the western rim owned by the hualapai Indians…tried the skywalk, took a helicopter into the canyon and a raft down the Colorado river. Then we drove to Williams and took the train to the Canyon. So much to see…
We also made a quick trip through Sedona but didn’t have time to really see much. Hope it warms up for you soon. Have a wonderful time and safe travels!
Wow you two really had a great adventure from sky to water and the train. We are not going to be checking out that skywalk although we have read about it. You will have to tell us about it and the rest of your time at the GC when we next meet in Mazatlan.
Despite the cold, it looks like you’re having a good time. Here in Duncan it’s still shorts and tee shirt weather…
Good for you, enjoy your weather. We are having a great time no matter what. Tell Shelagh that lots of wine is involved 🙂 So many new wines to try here in the US.
Love your new lights. Wow, looks cold there! Have you tried an electric warming/heating blanket? I can’t live without mine due to my arthritis and use it year round. We have a Queen size one that has duel controls so I don’t cook hubby out. They might be a good option (although you probably already have tried that) for colder weather
Definitely cold! Thanks for the suggestions but we both like fresh air and coolness at night.
You should really try a heated mattress pad, they’re delightful.
Welcome to the comment section of the blog. Nice to have you here. I don’t think that I could take that much heat at night. We actually open the windows at night ( lately in the cold just a few inches ) and once I am in bed our duvet keeps us warm. I use the hot water bottle to keep the shock of the cold from giving me a chill when I get between the sheets.
Too bad you are having such poor weather. It is usually a lot warmer there at this time of year. We just came back from Europe where they are experiencing warmer than normal temperatures and broke records here the other day for warm weather as well. Looks like it will be nice here until we head down south. Looks like you are making the best of it and managing to see lots. Love that area.
I know, crazy weather. My greatest fear was that we would be too hot during the Balloon Fiesta, just the opposite. As you know I never wear pants and have been wearing them now for 12 straight days. Happy for you that you had great weather on your trip and cruise. Also good to hear that you will have nice weather at home.
Wow! That food looks great!!!!
It was excellent, except the next day our clothes smelled like rancid grease. They must not have an exhaust fan in the kitchen. Three days latter our clothes still smell. It will be an issue getting our jackets clear of the smell. Hopefully laundry will take care of the rest. We left them in the car as we drove the last two days with the windows open a bit, now the car reeks of grease.
