Candid photos from the colonia on the Isla

Here on Isla de la Piedra we have ejido and colonia  lands.  I am not an expert but in a tiny nutshell the ejido lands are a Mexican system of government, an area of communal land used for agriculture, on which community members individually farm designated parcels and collectively maintain communal holdings.  The colonia is outside of this area and is often referred to as a colony or community or neighborhood and sometimes a shantytown.

A typical street.

Some kids making the most of what they have on hand and their imaginations.

Creative fencing.

Some homes are nicer than others.  Many live in cardboard shacks.

We watched the beginning construction of this new home last spring.  It looks fabulous.

This vehicle has been resting here for a very long time.  Likely it will be here as long as we keep coming back to the Isla.

A small store. There are usually one or two every few blocks.

Coming around this corner there is a lovely view of the harbor.

So many changes on the Isla in general but nothing surprised us more than this four story modern looking apartment building.

So many changes in such a shorty time, looks like Isla is loosing its small town atmosphere to growth.

Even here in Apache Junction, the changes are always interesting to see when we’ve been gone for five or six months. And there always seem to be a lot of them. It was really interesting to see the different houses that people live in. I sometimes think that American children would be better off using their imaginations more.

  4. Beautiful area, nice weather and seeming like paradise. Also obvious poverty, barricaded windows and doors. It’s good to see progress, new housing and paved streets. But above all, people seem to be friendly and happy there which is not always the case in big cities.
Enjoy your little piece of paradise there and have fun.

We love our little corner of paradise and know that the years are numbered but hopefully it will all work out. Everyone here on the Isla is happy, they know no other life and are so very giving.

Nice tour of the Isla, thank you. Will be interesting to see where the “high rise” apartment building is located – it could have beautiful views. Continue to enjoy your time there.

The high rise is across the small bay from the main embarcadero. I noticed the other day that you can’t even see it because the palm trees are so high.
