Yesterday was the day to make a big change to my potted plant area.
Now that we are no longer planting directly into the soil it was time to make the area neater looking. Darwin helped Colin with the project.
All the palm tree roots that had been killing my hibiscus year after year had to be removed to level the soil.
I still had some Oleanders planted in the soil but as they have not bloomed in all of the years I have had them, it was time to remove them as they could no longer be a part of the area.
The soil had to be leveled and bit by bit the bricks were placed in the perfect position. There had always been a row of bricks on each side of the soil so now the plant patio was six bricks wide. Those bricks cost 3 pesos each or .15 of a US cent.
Darwin was in charge of making sure that we had straight edges. Ismael came at the end to get rid of the old roots, etc, he took away 3 1/2 wheelbarrows full.
Adding some sand between the cracks.
Replacing the pots. Funny how nine winters ago I started with pots and then moved to planting everything into the ground and now a part of my garden is back to pots.
It looks so much better than having the plant pots sitting on the old soil.
Yesterday was a huge day for the cruise ships. There where three in port. Can you spot what is strange in this photo?
This Norwegian cruise ship is going out the shipping channel to the ocean backwards! We can only assume that it was being pulled and pushed by tug boats. This is a first in all the years that we have been here.
Once clear of the channel mouth it was turned. Likely there was not enough room to turn all three large vessels in port. As they arrive in the morning they are always turned so they are facing the correct direction to exit the port.
Carnival was next ship to leave.
It was heading South to Puerto Vallarta while the Norwegian sailed towards Cabo San Lucas.
Finally the Princess ship headed out.
As if that wasn’t enough excitement yesterday, we had an outstanding display of dolphin activity just before sunset. They were feeding directly in front of the RV park for over twenty minutes. It was fun to watch them moving in every direction, often jumping high enough for us to see their backs. I think I might have mentioned it before, we are loving our time here in paradise.
Nope, real sure you’ve never EVER mentioned loving being there!
Oh, well I will try and remember to mention it more 🙂
Alway something going on there to keep you busy, like your garden now looks much neater. That would not be a good to to go to Town with 3 cruise ships in port.
You are right, not a good idea to go into town the last two days which is why we waited until today. Glad you like the new plant patio look.
I can only imagine what town was like with 3 ships in port – way too many at one time. A dolphin show – that would be fun! Yesterday a grey whale made its way into the Courtenay estuary right where we kayak – Mom and I were coming home from the chiro at 4pm and saw a fisheries vessel (road is 10 feet from the estuary) following something then saw the whale shoot water up from his spout! I’ve never seen a grey whale before, we stopped to see if we could see more but it was getting dark and he didn’t shoot water up again. I saw on the news the fisheries people are trying to encourage the whale back to open sea. The area he was in is normally shallow but due to high tides is much deeper than normal or he would have never come right into the channel. I also saw a heron and two eagles – love living where the wildlife does!
Likely something like an extra 9000 bodies running around Centro from those three ships! How very special to have seen that whale.
Your patio area looks amazing! Very nice job…
Gracias, I am enjoying the clean look of it all
Your planters look great but I’m curious as to why you took the plants out of the ground? Isn’t it amazing how cheap bricks are south of Canada!
The roots of the palm tree strangle my plants. Every year I have to clean out the flower bed, dig up the roots, add new soil and new plants but when I get back in the fall most of them are dead. Just not worth the time nor money to keep doing this year after year. My other flower bed ( on the right – looking at the ocean, does just fine year after year as do my plants at the back of our site ). Everyone else here had most of their plants in pots and they do well year after year. However I do have to find a place to take my potted plants when we are gone to be sure they are cared for. The large ones get very heavy to carry back and forth.
Plant place w/ bricks looks great!!!
Glad you like it.
