Mom update….

Yesterday was not such a great day for my Mom.  Here is a copy paste from my sister who was at the hospital….

ok, she was taken out of sedation about 9 am this morning.  Her saturation and volume levels were getting up to where they should be.  Update from 3:30 pm today.  She has and still has a breathing tube but has done most of breathing on her own.  She was in pain they gave her meds – staying on top of that.  She had restless leg syndrome, but is getting her meds for that.  When we saw her, she became more agitated so we left very soon.  They are going to sedate her tonite so she can sleep and the tube will stay in so there are no problems. They told us better to wait to take it out, then do it too early and have to put it back in.  She was given 2 pillows, was more comfie.  They said what we saw today was normal.   40% of patients leave icu after 24 hours, and 60 % stay one or two extra days.  We think she will be in the 60%  The doc told dad Thurday nite that the surgery went better than expected.  So, thats about it.  No one will go tonite because we dont want her agitated, trying to communicate.  Dad and I will go again tomorrow around 1 pm.   The nurse told dad she will seem like a diff. person by then.  So, all is well, and I thought the staff was great – better than the royal alex.   Taking very good care of her.  If you have questions, call me or email.  Dad is exhausted and has some calls to make tonight still.  No worrying allowed –
Lise
PS.  Honest – she is doing well.

Just spoke with my Dad about 15 minutes ago…….Mom is still being kept sedated and remains in ICU.  The surgeon plans on doing some tests this morning before deciding if he will allow her to wake up.  I won’t have any updates for several hours.

Enjoy Christmas Eve everyone.

2:45PM  No change, Mom still sedated and intubated in ICU.  Dad is at her side.

6:00PM…..Mom still under sedation and with tube but Dad not so happy with nursing staff.  Nor I, they would not speak with me.  dad does not understand what is happening with Mom and the nurse just says she is doing as well as can be expected.

9:00PM….no answer on the ICU phone, even via the hospital operator….will try in 15 minutes…..

10:05PM////Mom awake, agitated and still intubated but no contact with Dad….for some reason the hospital would not take Dad’s calls, finally I got thru two scrooges….no angels on duty tonight!!!  At least Dad can go to sleep now.  Me too.

I think because of her age she will probably be in the 60% status..there is no greater healer than rest for sure..it sounds like she is doing very well…and bless her heart for trying to communicate…every hour and every day will show improvement I’m sure..sounds like she has a fantastic medical team. I hope your dad can get some rest…like Lise said “no worrying allowed”…please get some rest!

I know it is hard waiting and being so far away but it does sound like your Mom is doing okay. You hang in there and keep your spirits up. We’ll be thinking about you and your family. Merry Christmas!

After Jim’s first by pass surgery I wasn’t prepared for how he was in the ICU. It about did me in when he tried so hard to talk to me. He doesn’t remember anything about it but I sure do. The second time I was better prepared and it didn’t scare me so bad. He spent a couple of days in ICU. It was easier on him because he doesn’t remember anything. His second by pass was so different because technology is so much better now than it was. I think they are doing the right thing to keep you Mom sedated and calm for now. Tomorrow will be a whole better day.

After Millie’s dad’s bypass surgery he kind of went crazy too. He climbed out of the bed-over the rails-tore out all his tubes and was trying to leave-naked! They caught him, sedated him, got him comfy and he was just fine. That was 7 years ago, and today he is thriving. So tough for you being so far away, especially when the staff won’t talk to you or your dad. Does Canada have the equivalent of the HIPAA laws? Sometimes they don’t make sense!

  7. Hoping that your Mom is feeling better today. We are thinking of you. Hope you have a Merry Christmas.
