Moving along

It has been so cold that at times we can hear the lake ice expanding and contracting. We finally figured out what that odd sound we kept hearing was. It is our house expanding and contracting. The noise starts just as the sun is setting and the temps get even colder. It certainly looks like a beautiful day out there until one opens the door. I haven’t been outside all week. I saw someone walking today, she was fighting the wind and had  her head totally wrapped up with only her eyes peeking out. She did not look like she was enjoying her walk. I also saw a couple give their wee dog a walk, they were bundled up but the pup did not even have a sweater on 😥 We remain cold, very cold. Yesterday they even shut down some chairlifts at Big White because is was too cold.

Someone is attempting to organize a 50th high school reunion in Edmonton for May 1st. I know that I won’t be there.  Can you find me in this photo?

Of course I had more computer challenges.  Turns out that one problem that I have been working on for a few weeks is not fixable. I would have to delete Safari and all of my passwords in order to repair the problem. I have decided to just live with the problem. Not sure that I can recall all the passwords that are stored in this computer. Not worth the risk. It took 50 minutes to sort out my Fitbit problem. Basically I had to reinstall Fitbit Connect and start over. In the back of my mind I vaguely recall that one of the Apple techs had me shut down that app. Well at least I am once again functioning in that department.

Someone here in the park actually went outside ( unlike myself ) and got some good photos of the Rescue training exercises.

Before Christmas I had made my favourite shortbread cookie recipe which we really enjoyed. However I got confused and purchased ingredients for an English shortbread cookie that uses pastry flour and icing sugar. Not wanting to waste the ingredients we decided to make the English shortbread yesterday. Even though the recipe is hand-written I am not certain that I ever made it before. It calls for 3 to 4 cups of flour and talks about the dough being like pie pastry consistency but not dry. By the time I had put in 3 cups I could barely stir the mix any more so decided that was enough floor. I was mixing everything by hand.  So we started to bake the cookies but they all came out rather flat.  I don’t think that is how they were suppose to look.  I kept making larger dough balls to put on the cookie sheet but in the end they all flattened out. No matter how they look they are very very tasty. I guess I should have used more flour.

February 9th, 2020. I am doing ever so much better a year later in every which way.

February 23rd, 2020.

Hopefully now in 2021 we will have light at the end of the tunnel.

  1. I didn’t realize your temperatures had risen that much. Rescue Crews need to practice too.
I’d guess that you are standing with your arms folded wearing lite blue pants.
    Be Safe and Enjoy!

    It’s about time.

No they have not risen. They just cut through the ice to do their training and also were close to the still flowing mountain stream that feeds our lake. You didn’t pick me out of the line up 🙂

A suggestion regarding passwords – I have over 100 but have no problem remembering them due to my system. I start and end all of them with the same information, ie, something easy to remember such as an address 569thunderave, then for a facebook password change it to 569thunderfacave. All other passwords would then just replace ‘fac’ with ‘bel’ for bell telephone or ‘rog’ for rogers. All too easy for me. However, I save an Excel spreadsheet listing all of the passwords but never the ‘thunder’ so if I was hacked and they saw 569——facave they would have a hard time coming up with the —–. As some websites want special characters such as a capital letter or a !, etc I simply record them with that so if I cannot use 569thunderfacave and have to use 569Thunderfacave! it is there safely in my Excel sheet to refer to.

I have used this for several years and it works just fine and most of the time I do not have to even look up a password on my Excel sheet.

But Don what happens when I start to forget things. Already I can go into the kitchen and forget why I went there. I am much better writing things down more or less clearly. I do tend to make my passwords related so I know what they are – most of the time. I really was happy in the olden days 🙂

REGARDING PASSWORDS, I WAS HAVING THE SAME PROBLEM WITH PASSWORDS,(GETTING OLD IS NOT AS FUN AS IT LOOKS.)
I AM USING “LASTPASS.COM”. I PAY $36. A YEAR. IT KEEPS TRACK OF ANY AND ALL PASSWORDS THAT YOU ACCESS ON YOUR COMPUTER.
WHEN YOU GO TO A SIGN IN PAGE AT A WEBSITE, IT WILL FILL IN THE SIGN IN AND PASSWORD
INFORMATION FOR YOU. THE ONLY PASSWORD YOU MUST REMEMBER IS YOUR “MASTER PASSWORD”.
IT HAS BEEN A LIFESAVER FOR ME. THERE ARE OTHER SOFTWARE PASSWORD PROGRAMS OUT THERE ALSO FOR YOU TO CHECK OUT.
AS ALWAYS, I LOVE YOUR BLOG NO MATTER WHERE YOU ARE :))

Lovely to hear from you. Lastpass.com sounds like a good idea. My problem is that I don’t remember some obsolete passwords from years and years ago so I don’t want to lose them by wiping them out of my computer.

  4. Hey there is a gorgeous young lady sitting up front in a white pantsuit. I think her name is Contessa?
What a strange fix to delete Safari and to start over. There must be another way. As to passwords it is becoming quite the chore as almost all apps and sites require one. I personally write them down by “hand” in a book dedicated only for passwords. That is because we use many devices and any of them could be hacked, damaged or become un-functionally at one point. If I had to use someone else’s computer to access one of my accounts or apps, I could look up the password in the book. But we all have our own methods of keeping track of them.
Hope Canada is warming up soon!

You got it right Marlene. I am so over this computer stuff. It is takin over all of my free time. Hopefully my latest fix will work. I do have a tiny book with my passwords written down but I may not have started writing them early enough and what if I miss something important so I will just deal with what I have.

  5. Jim and Barb says:

I had to cheat and read Marlene’s comment to see which one you were!

I think you are the one in the front row all in white.

  7. Judith says:

Ha. I don’t have a clue! So when are you going to reveal? I’m just guessing by hair color, so the blue pants girl and the front row all in white girl are the finalists. Going to be a rough few days here with Canadian temperatures. I’ve never seen zero around here, but we’re to have a couple of nights of it, in addtion to snow. NOTHING is built for that here. So fingers crossed the pipes don’t freeze and the power doesn’t go off. Sheesh, Meanwhilem I look forward to you making an ID of yourself in that photo!

Most definitely front wearing white and glasses you haven’t changed a bit!! It is bitter cold down here,my poor hummingbird feeder has to come inside every few hours just to thaw out then back outside till the next round. I’ve started to make vanilla extract since it’s crazy expensive to purchase without the luxury of Mexico at my fingertips it’s definitely not cheap to make good quality extract, $75.00 for 4oz of Madagascar beans and $50.00 for 1 litre of vodka. This will be what is called the mother jar and takes 1 year to mature. I will end up with pure vanilla extract very bold in flavour but it did hurt a tiny bit to pour an entire bottle of vodka into something that I will only use for baking later on lol.
    Enjoy your day
