Western Grebe

We have a new, well I haven’t ever seen it before, duck like bird on Duck Lake!  I had noticed this very long necked duck bird diving in front of our place for the last few days.

A Western Grebe!

Very difficult to get a good shot as it is constantly diving.  I do hope there are two of them as I found this photo on the internet….

It would be lovely to catch their mating dance. Likely it is too late this year.

It seems that this critter is just on the cusp of its breeding area which is why I may not have seen it before.  A very interesting bird in that it does everything in the water including nesting.  This is a good link about the Western Grebe along with a map of the territory they travel through.

They have got to be the coolest birds.

I have to chime in with a little “bat story”.
Once upon a time, lying peacefully on the couch at my parent’s place, (both deceased for over 25 years) I came off it by about a foot when my Mother yelped, “There’s a BAT”.
Seems it flew past her and then back into the next room. I hadn’t seen anything, but she sure gave me a fright.
Once I got my heart back in my chest, I found him clambering up the inside of one of the louvred doors in their bedroom closet. It was a simple trick to get him to cling onto a towel, gently wrap him up and take him outdoors.
We do seem to have a lot of bat houses in Vienna, although I’m hard pressed to remember the numbers. (It was in the tens of thousands methinks)

    Nary a mosquito in town.
    Funny how that works.

Oh my gosh – love that bird – so unique! And yes – Bob is right – bats are good at keeping the mosquito population down! Before I retired from teaching, we took our first graders to a local cave on a field trip. There were hundreds of bats in the one area of the cave – that’s the quietest I’d ever seen our kids on a field trip! They were scared to death!

  3. Very looking unique bird. nice that you were able to identified it.
