Tis The Season…

…… this is the time of year to donate to helping the less fortunate here on Isla de la Piedra so that they may have a Christmas / Christmas Eve dinner. I have collected for this group for many many years since 2010 and over Covid helped keep the community fed.

The following is from Rocio and Dallas……

Hello everyone and buen dia. We hope everyone had a great time this summer. It is almost Christmas time again so we are getting ready for Rocio’s Christmas Eve chicken and despensa program to provide a nice Christmas Eve dinner for the less fortunate folks here in Isla de la Piedra (Stone Island) and in Barron.
The first year of the program we delivered 18 raw chickens with despensas. The second year we delivered 82. The third year we provided 150 chickens with despensas along with donated clothing. We set up in the park and let the people come to us.
This will be our 12th year and like the last 3 years, we will have the folks come to our house early Christmas Eve morning to receive their chicken and despensa and choose some clothes.
Rocio works with the leaders of the different neighborhoods of the Isla to determine those in need so we can help them
have a nice Christmas Eve dinner.
Last year with the help of Friends of the Isla, Friends Diner, La Baikery and lots of other donors of money, clothing, toys, shoes, blankets, towels, etc., and time, we were able to again provide 325 chickens with despensas, including 70 to Barron. We would like to equal that this year.
The local economy is way down this year so we want to provide a great Christmas Eve dinner.
This year we would like to provide the chicken (2-2.25 kg), 1 liter of milk, 1 kg of beans, 1 kg of rice, 1 cooking oil, 1 pasta, 1 tomatoe puree, 1 kg of flour, 1kg of potatoes, 1kg of carrots, and 1kg of bananas.
Our current estimate for the price of each chicken with despensa is approxiamately $325 pesos so we are hoping to raise $110,000 pesos.
Wendy has kindly allowed us to use Friends Diner as a donation drop of location in the Golden Zone and in Cerritos again this year. Guadalupe has graciously allowed us to use La Baikery in Centro again this year.
We are asking for donations of money, clothes, shoes, towels, and blankets, etc. Please help if you can so we can make it a very merry Christmas for all these folks.

Thank you very much. We appreciate your generosity,

Muchas gracias. Apreciamos su generosidad.

Every year becomes more and more difficult for each of us.  Any amount that you can spare will bring joy to those who often live in cardboard homes. Anything you can donate is appreciated more than you will ever know.

December already……

Time moves quicker than we often are aware of.

Oh wait. I am already doing that. So very thankful!

Ciela getting a mini massage also known as a get rid of that excess hair.

Guess who arrived yesterday? Our compound is now complete with Genie and Joe here. They are working at getting set up for the many months to come. Linda and Russell who live in the apartment upstairs to our right ( facing the ocean ) arrived today. Looking forward to giving them hugs in the morning. Our wee community is filling up.

Just this past Thursday we had our neighbor ( to the right ) Umberto and his wife and five year old daughter over for a visit. I was concerned about conversation but it all worked out, either we know more Spanish than we think or it just worked out perfectly. Mom and daughter do not speak any English. Lots of laughs and a friendship was further strengthened. We were all shocked at the end when the daughter who never speaks English said very clearly ” thank you so very much”. They kept our plants alive while we were back in Canada.

Going through 30 years of old recipes – keep or discard? I might be at this well into the new year.

Happy days…..thanks for sharing the photo Fred.

The best is yet to come.

It truly is.
