A few days ago a tragedy has become public. A dachshund breeder about 60 miles away, had their 30 dogs seized by the SPCA. Apparently someone left the tip on an animal help hot line. They were all dachshunds. In fact one of those dogs gave birth to five puppies late today. Such deplorable conditions.
It is a horrific story to read but please do. This link actually includes a video. It is hard to believe that this can actually happen.
‘Terrible living conditions’: BC SPCA seizes 30 dachshunds in Okanagan
The Kelowna Dachshund Club (https://www.facebook.com/groups/727014434042198) of which I belong to, are doing everything we can to help. At this point we are raising monies to held care for these dogs and feed them. The SPCA has seized the dogs and they are being held somewhere here in Kelowna. At this point we have started a fundraiser in order to pay the vets who are working to save these animals as well as gathering supplies and food. So many in our club have already offered to adopt a doxie or to foster one. As we all have this breed we know what that they need, what their personalities are and their various idiosyncrasies.
Can you please make a donation? $10.00 will go a long way.
Thank you! We need all the help we can get.
We certainly do.
Contessa — Another horror story, only this time it’s Dachshunds. The photos are terrible, but I’ve seen worse. I’m involved with the American Cavalier Rescue Trust, the national rescue organization affiliated with the AKC Cavalier King Charles Spaniel parent club. Surely there’s a Canadian national rescue group who could help these dogs in a better way than the local/regional SPCA (that is overwhelmed), that knows the specific needs of the breed, and has a network of vetted foster parents that have experience in helping these poor dogs heal and be prepared for adoption. This past summer, the Rescue Trust took in 46 neglected Cavaliers from a single breeder; fosters from across the US are currently helping them adjust to life in real houses. Most recently, we took in 36 Cavaliers surrendered by a commercial breeder who found that he was having a hard time selling the dogs and puppies now that Covid is over. It is a lot of work, but our volunteers know the needs of our breed and work together smoothly with veterinarians and with volunteer foster families. Plus we have national resources to raise money…. sometimes thousands of $$$ in a few days. Hopefully someone in your local group can help reach out to a larger national group for their help. We’ve been told to expect more surrenders from commercial breeders in the coming weeks and months as the economy changes. Good luck.
Thank you for taking the time to explain all of this to me. Sadly here in Canada we don’t have a higher up national group. So far we have raised $850.00.
Wish I could help more. I try to support another rescue group that takes in dogs from breeders and the situation is dire here in the US. So many breeders and no buyers. So they are going out of business. And dumping the dogs. Heart breaking.
Thank you so very much Sandy.
I sit here with my Finn all curled up warm n safe on my lap. I see those pics of those poor babies and can hardly stand it… how can people do this?
